The word itself, "Halloween," actually has its origins in the Catholic Church. It comes from a contracted corruption of All Hallows Eve. But in the first century AD, Samhain was assimilated into celebrations of some of the other Roman traditions that took place in October, such as their day to honor Pomona, the Roman goddess of fruit and trees. The symbol of Pomona is the apple, which might explain the origin of our modern tradition of bobbing for apples on Halloween.

The thrust of the practices also changed over time to become more ritualized. As belief in spirit possession waned, the practice of dressing up like hobgoblins, ghosts, and witches took on a more ceremonial role.

The Jack-o-lantern custom probably comes from Irish folklore. As the tale is told, a man named Jack, who was notorious as a drunkard and trickster, tricked Satan into climbing a tree. 克拉拉·蔡特金 (Klara Zetkin) 1857年7月5日出生于德国萨克森州维德劳一个教师家庭，15岁时全家迁至莱比锡。1874年至1878年就读莱比锡私立师范学校。毕业后当过家庭教师，1878年结识流亡德国的俄国革命家奥西普·蔡特金，两人于1882年结婚。蔡特金在奥西普指导下阅读了《共产党宣言》和马克思、恩格斯的其他著作，并投身工人运动。1882年至1892年，她与丈夫及两个孩子流亡瑞士和法国巴黎，结识了马克思的女儿劳拉· 拉法尔格。1889年参加第二国际成立大会。1897年加入德国社会民主党。

后来，“三八鬼子”这句话一直流传下来，在流传过程中，人们为了简便，就缩为“三八”。凡是遇到那些行为不端，语言粗鲁、不遵礼仪的人，人们就说：“这个人真‘三八’。”
