As a correspondent of the Qingdao Morning News, I visited Dr. James Gilman, the President of the International Committee for Marco Polo Studies in England. In this picture, this is James, and this is me and we are looking at a dragon’s tooth. This is a true story.

65 years ago, James lived in Qingdao. Then he was only 5 years old. He often visited the Aquarium and was fascinated by a creature on display there, which he thought was a dragon. He was afraid of its sharp teeth and wanted one to keep as a treasure.

In the late 1930s, when the Japanese occupied Qingdao, his family had to leave. On his last day in Qingdao, he ran to the Aquarium and pulled out one of the teeth from the dragon’s mouth.

He kept the tooth for the next 65 years, but the feeling of guilt at having stolen it was there in the background all through his life. It was always on his conscience, and the feeling intensified as he became older. Finally he decided to put right his childish error. In 2002, he visited Qingdao and returned it to the Aquarium with his sincere apologies. He received a warm welcome.

When James visited Qingdao, I accompanied him all the time and reported on his visit. I was deeply touched by his honesty. It has taught me a lot. I think to err is human. The important thing is to have the courage to admit and correct one’s error.

Honesty is a vital quality of human behaviour. So we should try to keep an honest mind in everything we say and do. I would like to say to all of my friends: Let’s be honest people of good moral character.

What is the most important thing in life. Maybe some classmates said "health first", maybe some friends can speak "friendship is the most important". However, if a person is not honest, even if the body again good also useless, even if will have more friends or separate.

春秋战国时，秦国的商鞅在秦孝公的支持下主持变法。当时处于战争频繁、人心惶惶之际，为了树立威信，推进改革，商鞅下令在都城南门外立一根三丈长的木头，并当众许下诺言：谁能把这根木头搬到北门，赏金十两。围观的人不相信如此轻而易举的事能得到如此高的赏赐，结果没人肯出手一试。于是，商鞅将赏金提高到50金。重赏之下必有勇夫，终于有人站起将木头扛到了北门。商鞅立即赏了他五十金。商鞅这一举动，在百姓心中树立起了威信，而商鞅接下来的变法就很快在秦国推广开了。

新法使秦国渐渐强盛，最终统一了中国。而同样在商鞅“立木为信”的地方，在早它400年以前，却曾发生过一场令人啼笑皆非的“烽火戏诸侯”的闹剧。周幽王有个宠妃叫褒姒，为博取她的一笑，周幽王下令在都城附近20多座烽火台上点起烽火——烽火是边关报警的信号，只有在外敌入侵需召诸侯来救援的时候才能点燃。结果诸侯们见到烽火，率领兵将们匆匆赶到，弄明白这是君王为博妻一笑的花招后又愤然离去。褒姒看到平日威仪赫赫的诸侯们手足无措的样子，终于开心一笑。五年后，酉夷太戎大举攻周，幽王烽火再燃而诸侯未到——谁也不愿再上第二次当了。结果幽王被逼自刎而褒姒也被俘虏。一个“立木取信”，一诺千金;一个帝王无信，戏玩“狼来了”的游戏。结果前者变法成功，国强势壮;后者自取其辱，身死国亡。可见，“信”对一个国家的兴衰存亡都起着非常重要的作用。

In my opinion all of these phenomena due to three following reasons.First the people in the country which has a enormous population compete with each other more and more firely. When it comes to honesty, quite a lot of people believe it is essential to a person’s character and success.

They base their idea on the following reasons: on one hand, successful business owes much to mutual trust; on another hand, great people in history such as Abraham Lincoln and Genete Washington set us good examples of being honest, they are great because they are honest.

But some people think differently. They believe honesty is becoming out of date.

Furthermore, some one is afired that he cant pass the final exams leading to his degree, in the fruit of being absorbed into computer games or disappointment in love.

Consequently, only by cheating can they graduate and get the degree on time. 一年、两年、三年……十五年过去了，我已把这事忘得一干二净了，因为我就没在乎她还这2元钱，她居然还记着。两年前的一天，在家门口站着一位眉清目秀，衣着得体的年轻姑娘，象天使般的可爱。甜甜地叫了我一声‘大姐’并且告诉我，在她8岁时，是我给了她2元钱的帮助。我愣了好久好久，她又接着告诉我 ‘第二天，我就到学校去等你，有一位好心的大姐告诉了我你的名字，我记下了，就为了长大后要找到你。走进屋里，她从包里取出一张崭新的2元纸币递给我，临走时又从包里拿出1000元给我，被我拒绝了。就这样，我收下了这珍贵的2元钱，藏在了我的钱包里，也藏在了我的心底。”

我明白了，妈妈告诉我这个2元钱的故事，是要让我明白“赠人玫瑰，手有余香”;妈妈珍藏这2元钱，是因为妈妈在乎当年8岁小妹妹的诚信。因为诚信让人感到人间的情义无价。

Once upon a time, I did not pay for my bill when I bought a pen, because

the boss forgot to charge me, so I pretended to not realize it and just walk

away with the pen. Many years passed, every time when I think of it, I will be

ashamed of myself, I lost the important thing once, but I will not lose it

again.

The merit of honesty occupies great importance today. In the old time,

without the camera’s supervisor, people kept their honesty according to their

self-consciousness. It seems that if they are not honest, they would not get any

punishment. But today, as the technology develops, people are supervised by the

high-technologies all the time, once they are caught cheating, their files will

have the spot, which affect their career badly.

We are living in the modern life, we need to self-behaved, what we do is

under the invisible cameras’ watching. Even we make the small mistake, we will

be recorded without noticed. What we do decides what kind of person we are, so

let’s be an honest person all the time.

这是考前的几分钟，其他人都在安静的看书或者是讨论此刻紧张的心情，单单小明一个，一直在默默祈祷，恳求上苍保佑他顺利通过这次期末考试。

他双手合十，紧闭着双眼，嘴里一遍遍的念叨着那句话"考试通过，考试通过，考试通过......”好似一个奔赴刑场的犯人。

铃声终于响起了，试卷发下来的时候，他的心跳的特别厉害，自己也不知道怎么回事，大大小小的考试自己已经经历了很多了，为什么这么一次期末考试就能让自己紧张成这样?是因为上次的失败，还是因为自己的不自信?他告诉自己不要多想了，开始答题吧!

起初题目答得很顺，但现在遇到了几难题，无法从脑中提取他们的答案来，而大脑还在提醒他，自己考试前枉费心机的笔记就在书桌里面，看不看......他没有动手，而是将自己的手插在自己的发丝中，大脑在快速的转动，但绞尽脑汁也还是没有想到答案是什么，他开始心慌意乱，手无足措，心想:看看吧，没事的。心中的这个声音像是天使的声音，但是触碰了这个本子就会变成魔鬼。正在准备动手的时候，他的目光看到了试卷上一道小字——诚信答题，字很小，但却格外晃眼，他有过一瞬间的犹豫，但他心中几乎说服不了自己的心了，因为双手正在付诸行动，在颤抖，嗓子发干，心跳打击着心腔一次又一次，他抬起头来看见监考老师正在看窗外，一副漫不经心的样子，手，离书桌近了，又近了......他咬着牙，用手指顶着突突乱跳的太阳穴，手心冒出了汗，他把凳子往后靠了一点，又一点，他又环顾四周，同学们都在沙沙的写着试卷，虽然已经到了冬天，但他的额头上却有了许多汗珠，笔在手里拿起又放下，他在这时候做出了决定。

“看一次，就看一次，肯定没事的。”他把手伸入书桌时这样想着，他的手在书桌来回地摸索着，终于摸到了，冰冷而又赢的封面，用手轻轻的翻开着，同时又慢慢的往外拉着，看到了，看到了......正在欣喜的时候，一只手往他的书桌前一伸，说:“拿出来吧。”小明吓的把本子往桌子里一推，抬起头来，“嗡——”的一下，脑袋空白了，他用祈求的眼光看着老师，仿佛在说:“原谅我吧!”随着老师的这句话，同学们把目光投到了

小明的身上......

在这时候，他想起了他的母亲对他说过的一句话:“无论如何都要做一个诚实的人因为诚实是无价的。”他无奈了，绝望了，抽出了本子递给了老师，闭上了眼睛。他感觉自己的身体在不断的下坠，坠入那无底的黑色深渊，他想呼喊却怎么也喊不出声音，他努力伸出手想抓住却什么也抓不到，周围还伴随着一个声音:“诚信无价。”他正在一步步地下沉，下沉......

记得小学四年级时，我明白了一个道理：诚信是做人的根本。

那天下午，同桌叫我帮他买一份第二天的早餐，他因为住校，所以不方便买早餐，就托人帮他买早餐。他给了我买早餐的钱，结果被我弄掉了，然后就没有钱买早餐。

到晚上的时候，我叫妈给我钱，作为我第二天的早餐钱。

第二天早上，爸问我有没有早餐钱，我却撒谎说：”没有早餐钱。“他就叫我去他口袋里拿钱，并告诉我拿五块钱，而我却拿了十块钱，并去帮同桌买了早餐。而下午回家，妈就责问我，你是不是拿了你爸的钱，我顿时脸通红。但我却不承认拿了钱，直到妈在我口袋搜到了钱，我才承认拿了钱，并告诉了她事情的原委，妈并没有责怪我。

后来妈就苦口婆心地对我说：”你要钱就给我和你爸说，我和你爸不是不通情达理的人，你把别人的钱弄掉了，是要赔的，你能这样做，我也感到欣慰，但是做人要诚实，以后不能再没有经过我和你爸的同意拿钱了。“我顿时点了点头。

直到今天，我也时刻谨记着妈说的话，做人要诚实。

从《苏武牧羊》到《童年的宋庆龄》，从《神童晏殊》以《一千棵樱桃树》，多少诚信的故事与人穿越时空的隧道，跨过地区的障碍，传得甚远，并一直流传至今。可见，诚信无价，无论古今中外，都不例外。

如今，诚信成为了每个人立身做人的基本道德准则。我就是用诚信攀登知识的高峰，获得了优良成绩；用诚信校正了成长的脚步；用诚实守护良知的天空；用真诚待人结下了真挚的友情……诚信无价，我就遇到那么一件记忆犹心的事。

一次，我去上数学补习班。老师来收作业了，我才骤然想起作业忘做了。怎么办？说没做吧，可就评不上优秀学生；如果说忘带了吧，老师看我平时还挺认真，从不漏做，倒还能混过一次。可我转念一想，想起了妈妈常教育我：“做人犯错没关系，而犯了错却又隐瞒，这才是不可宽恕的。”于是，我打算保住诚实而放弃名誉。老师来了，我便答道：“忘做了”。同学们一听，都惊讶了。他们有的交头接耳，议论纷纷，还不时奇怪地看我两眼。几个平时要好的朋友都凑过来说我傻，说如果我说没带就万事大吉了，他们平时都是这样一混再混的。

回到家，我沮丧地把这件事告诉妈妈，而妈妈却开心地夸奖我：“孩子，诚实无价，做得好！”

一次又一次，在长辈不懈地教导下，我逐渐变得越来越诚实守信，让更多人称赞。

“精诚所至，金石为开。”诚信无价。愿诚信之花灿烂开放，伴我一生！

诚信乃立世之本。人活一世，就应该以诚信作伴，如果一个人连最基本的诚信都做不到，又何谈为人，何谈处事。古往今来，彰显诚信之事不可胜数。都说一诺千金，可黄金有价，诚信无价。人生路上有诚信为伴，收获的就不一定是金钱。

诚信可收获民心。春秋战国时，秦国的商鞅在秦孝公的支持下主持变法。当时处于战争频繁、人心惶惶之际，为了树立威信，推进改革，商鞅下令在都城南门外立一根三丈长的木头，并当众许下诺言：谁能把这根木头搬到北门，赏金十两。围观的人不相信如此轻而易举的事能得到如此高的赏赐，结果没人肯出手一试。于是，商鞅将赏金提高到50金。重赏之下，必有勇夫，终于有人站起将木头扛到了北门。商鞅立即赏了他五十金。商鞅这一举动，在百姓心中树立起了威信，而商鞅接下来的变法就很快在秦国推广开了。商鞅变法得以推广的原因正是树立了诚信。

诚信可救人性命。秦末有个叫季布的人，一向说话算数，信誉非常高，许多人都同他建立起了浓厚的友情。当时甚至流传着这样的谚语，“得黄金百斤，不如得季布一诺。”后来，他得罪了汉高祖刘邦，被悬赏捉拿。结果他的旧日的朋友不仅不被重金所惑，而且冒着灭九族的危险来保护他，使他免遭祸殃。季布得以保命的原因正是树立了诚信。

一个人诚实有信，自然得道多助，能获得大家的尊重和友谊。反过来，如果贪图一时的安逸或小便宜，而失信于朋友，表面上是得到了“实惠”。但为了这点实惠毁了自己的声誉。声誉相比于物质是重要得多的。所以，失信无异于失去了西瓜捡芝麻，得不偿失的。因为一个人若不守信，便会失去别人对他的信任。所以，一旦他处于困境，便没有人再愿意出手相救。失信于人者，一旦遭难，只有坐以待毙。

金钱有价，而诚信无价。以诚交人，自然有所得。
