遗憾的是，关于贫穷的辩论往往不是这样展开的。很多侃侃而谈的专家并没有讨论怎样抗击痢疾和登革热最有效，而是专注于那些“大问题”：贫穷的最终原因是什么？我们应该在多大程度上信任自由市场？穷人能够受益于民主制吗？外来援助可以发挥什么样的作用？等等。
