To begin with, modern lifestyle has contributed greatly to the increasing amount of waste and garbage we produce everyday. In other words, we have turned into a materialistic and mass-consumption society where we use more and throw away more than ever before. Moreover, countries are running out of space to store garbage and waste material. In fact, securing land for waste disposal raises controversies in many countries.

To solve this intractable problem, every citizen needs to participate in producing less garbage. For example, we can bring our own personal shopping bags instead of using plastic bags provided by stores and shops. Besides, the government can enforce stricter laws on companies to use biodegradable packaging or use recycled material. Indeed, this alone can eliminate much of the waste which is sent to at land fills. 在一些国家，资本家或生产单位的经济人为了追求高额利润，任意向自然界排放各种有害物质，严重污染环境，特别是大气和水源的污染，造成社会公害，引起许多疾病，使广大人民的健康和生命受到严重威胁。

对水源的污染有多种，其中“水俣病”就是举世闻名的日本公害之一。

“水俣病”于1953年首先在日本九州熊本县水俣镇发生，当时由于病因不明，故称之为水俣病。

1950年在水俣湾附近渔村中，发现一些猫步态不稳，抽筋麻痹，最后跳入水中溺死，当地人谓之“自杀猫”。

1953年水俣镇发现一个生怪病的人，开始只是口齿不清，步态不稳，面部痴呆，近而耳聋眼瞎，全身麻木，最后神经失常，一会酣睡，一会兴奋异常，身体弯弓，高叫而死。

1956年在这个地区又发现五十多人患有同样症状的病。

这是从水俣镇的工厂排放的氯化甲基汞污染海域，使鱼和贝类中毒造成的。

1973年在有明海南部沿岸的有明町等地又发生了水俣病。

晚上10时多，我来到金鸡路看到非机动车道、人行道都被大大小小30多家大排档占据，有烧烤店、炒菜店、米粉店、烧卤熟食店、粥铺、糖水铺……这些大排档的附近地面满是油污、食物残渣和纸巾、饭盒、筷子等垃圾，挡主满头大汗，一边炒菜、一边不停擦汗。因为水源不便，不少挡主还用黑油布擦锅，看着就让人恶心。

在狮子三路，我仔细观察了多家摊位后发现，这些路边流摊档的备用食物被随意堆在塑料筐里，没有任何遮盖，串好的肉串虽然放在塑料袋中，但袋口并未扎上，蒜蓉酱、豆腐乳等调料，也都是露天摆放的，不时招惹来一些苍蝇关顾。

晚上10时半，我来到石英街口，此时已有两家宵夜摊档“大摆筵席”，在摊档南边的黑暗处，一位老人正用煤炉摸黑烧火煮粥。煮粥大锅露天摆放，冒着腾腾白气。不远处，一位阿姨蹲在地上，在一个红色的大圆盆中洗碗，只见她将脏碗放到一个冒着洗洁精泡泡的大圆盆中涮一遍，但大圆盆的水已经浑浊。

晚上10时30分，我来到石湾南路看到，理想雅菀小区对面陆续有摊档经营者用三轮车将摆摊所需的工具以及食物运到人行道上，然后忙着摆放桌椅、清点食料。我数了数，这里有五个小吃摊档。我留意到，摊档经营者在摆摊时，已经有不少食客在那里站着等候吃夜宵。挡主摆好开档所需用品后，连手都没有洗，也没有戴上卫生防护用具，便旁若无人地用手撕粉。

晚上11时50分，我来到东山路与东门路交叉路口。在东山路北侧两家大排档宾客满座，人行道上摆放了20多台桌子。挡主将蔬菜摆放在一个大桌上，旁边放着一个卤味摊档，一名小伙子正在砧板上切着白萝卜。我凑近一看，发现砧板下方聚集了成群的蚂蚁，不少还在砧板下方乱蹿。小伙子切好一节萝卜后，这才不慌不忙地拿起一块泛黑的抹布，将蚂蚁“抹除”。

我在文明路看到，共有五家大排档连在一起占道经营，路边垃圾堆积，污水横流，纸巾、一次性筷子等遍地都是，路人纷纷绕路而行。而这些大排档所排放出来的刺鼻油烟味，则是附近居民反映最强烈的问题。

我在狮子三路和二环路交叉路口处，看到流动摊档的食品种类繁多，有麻辣烫、烧烤、烧蚝、臭豆腐等，过往车辆不时扬起尘土，地面到处是竹签、纸盒、塑料袋等垃圾。周围经常散发着油烟味、臭豆腐味和垃圾的酸臭味，有些喝醉酒的人还在这里随地呕吐、大小便。

我在石英街观察发现，每个桌子下都有食客随手扔弃的白色纸巾与装套一次性筷子的塑料薄膜，虽然档主会时不时地打扫一下，但仍是垃圾满地。当挡主扫地时，许多食客依然自顾自地吃着。其中一家摊档洗碗大盆旁不到1米远就有一堆白色垃圾，而大盆被满地的污水包围，显得邋遢不已。
