《悲惨世界》讲的是：主人公冉阿让是个因饥饿而偷一个面包而坐牢的苦囚犯，因为四次逃狱都被发现而加刑。在监狱里度过了十九年，他出狱后在一个小镇收到主教的教化，决心从善，他历尽千辛万苦来到了一个小城，成为巨富他广施仁爱却不能挽回自己因为饥饿而偷一个面包的错误，这时他碰到了苦难的芳盯，芳盯因为太穷而被迫把女儿寄养给两个暴发户，可她自己却不知情，还蛮以为自己的小宝贝，吃得好穿的好，其实那两个人把她的心肝当成女佣了，这时芳盯受到了冉阿让的接济，可是没过几天芳盯却死了。冉阿让也被抓了，冉阿让故意掉海里去，死里逃生了，他把珂赛特(芳盯的女儿)接回了自己家，并把她抚养大，最后成为了一个漂亮的姑娘，珂赛特嫁给了一个叫马吕斯的人，但是冉阿让也去世了。

另外一个方面我很喜欢路遥的出发点——平凡的世界。他的世界是平凡的这只是黄土高原上几千几万 座村落中的一座。但路遥却在平凡中看到了他的主人公的不平凡。比如说孙少平他受过了高中教育他经过自学达到可与大学生进行思想探讨的程度。作者赋予了这个人物各种优良的品质包括并不好高骛远。在路遥的世界中出现的都是平凡的人物这是在这些平凡的人物里他描写着人性中的善与美丑与恶。在他的世界里人的最大的优点就是认识到自己是平凡的。这点从孙少平身上得到最突出的体现。当他得到调出煤矿来到城市的机会时哪怕他选择的是煤矿。这不是又无他有多高的觉悟而是他对自己工作过的地方的热情和眷恋。他选择了平凡。 然而就如萨迦格言所说的“火把虽然下垂火舌却一直向上燃烧”一样哪怕再平凡的人也应为其所生活的世界奋斗!
