The first snow came. How beautiful it was, falling so silently all day

long, all night long, on the mountains, on the meadows, on the roofs of the

living, on the graves of the dead! All white save the river, that marked its

course by a winding black line across the landscape; and the leafless trees,

that against the leaden sky now revealed more fully the wonderful beauty and

intricacies of their branches. What silence, too, came with the snow, and what

seclusion! Every sound was muffled, every noise changed to something soft and

musical. No more tramping hoofs, no more rattling wheels! Only the chiming of

the sleigh-bells, beating as swift and merrily as the hearts of children.

The walls are white and blue. The curtains are blue too. There is a big

window on the wall, so my bedroom is also very bright. There are some photos on

the wall. They’re very beautiful.

In the middle of the room, there is my bed. It’s not so big, but it’s very

comfortable. Every night, I lay on the bed and have a good dream.

On the right of the bed, there is my desk and chair. They’re in front of

the window. My computer is on the desk. There is a lamp on the desk, too. I can

放学回家，我都尽量像个乖孩子一样，踏踏实实，写完了学校布置的任务，自己再找些习题做。尽管我这般“勤奋”，所出的成绩却也不尽人意。我是太渴望成为雄鹰，稍一振翅就能飞上山巅，而我忘了我只是只小蜗牛，想要攀上最高点，只能慢慢地、一步一步地向上爬。

唉，未来好遥远！

我坐在书桌前，用手支着沉重的脑袋，思考着和我面对面的习题所有可能的答案，而意识却渐渐模糊，上下眼皮也打起了架，我想喊停，却无济于事。或许在它们“和平”的前一秒吧，依稀记得指针指向了“11”这个数字。

然后……我就这么睡着了，枕着那未做完的习题！

当我真正感到“自由”这个名词，是我站在一片草地上——那或许是春天吧，草儿是那种舒服的绿，其中星星点点嵌着几朵小花。我蹲下来，轻轻抚摸着它可爱的花瓣，贪婪地嗅着它的芬芳，在这片草地上我俨然像个巨人，自由自在……

“阿嚏！”一个喷嚏把我拉回了现实，我才感到寒冷。“原来是场梦，真是白高兴了。”我揉揉眼睛，抬头——已经三点了，我睡了好久。

该休息了。我正准备收拾下好睡觉，只听得一阵熟悉的声音传入耳朵：“怎么还没睡啊？”妈妈轻声问道，“我看你灯还亮着，干嘛呢？”声音充满浓浓的爱。

“哦，我刚才写作业不小心睡着了。妈你先去睡吧，我没事。”我不敢让妈妈进来看到我这副狼狈的模样，赶紧把她搪塞了回去。“你这孩子，累了就去休息呗，别有太大的压力，考试正常发挥就行。”妈妈对我的关心仍是有增无减。待妈妈回房，我简单洗漱了一下，就扑向柔软的大床，看着窗外的点点星光，思考着近段时间自己的所作所为，和妈妈的话。恍惚间明白了许多——为何我不给自己留点free time，难道真的只有这么大压力才会变得更好么？我的心里也已柳暗花明。或许，在如此纷纷扰扰中，能够留一点空间给自己，是最明智的选择。

When memory began for me, my grandfather was past sixty-a great tall man

with thick hair becoming gray. He had black eyes and a straight nose which ended

in a slightly flattened tip. Once he explained seriously to me that he got that

flattened tip as a small child when he fell down and stepped on his nose.

The little marks of laughter at the corners of his eyes were the prodnct of

a kindly and humorous nature. The years of work which had bent his shoulders had

never dulled his humour nor his love of a joke.

Everywhere he went, "Gramp" made friends easily. At the end of half an hour

you felt you had known him all your life. I soon learned that he hated to give

orders , but that when he had to, he tried to make his orders sound like

suggestions.

One July morning, as he was leaving to go to the cornfield, he said :

"Edwin, you can pick up the potatoes in the field today if you want to do that.

" Then he drove away with his horses.

The day passed, and I did not have any desire to pick up potatoes. Evening

came and the potatoes were still in the field. Gramp, dusty and tired, led the

horses to get their drink.

"How many bags of potatoes were there?" Gramp inquired. "I dont know.

"

"How many potatoes did you pick up?"

"I didnt pick any. " "Not any! Why not?"

"You said I could pick, them up if I wanted to. You didnt say I had to.

"

In the next few minutes I learned a lesson I would not forget: when Gramp

said I could if I wanted to, he meant that I should want to.

Gram hated cruelty and injustice. The injustices of history, even those of

a thousand years before, angered her as much as the injustices of her own

day.

She also had a deep love of beauty. When she was almost seventy-five, and

had gone to live with one of her daughters, she spent a delightful morning

washing dishes because, as she said, the beautiful patterns on the dishes gave

her pleasure. The bird, the flowers, the clouds-all that was beautiful around

her- pleased her. She was like the father of the French painter, Millet, who

used to gather grass and show it to his son , saying , "See how beautif ul this

is ! "

In a pioneer society it is the harder qualities of mind and character that

are of value. The softer virtues are considered unnecessary. Men and women

struggling daily to earn a living are unable, even for a moment, to forget the

business of preserving their lives. Only unusual people, like my grandparents,

manage to keep the softer qualities in a world of daily struggle.

Such were the two people with whom I spent the months from June to

September in the wonderful days of summer and youth.

差别是所有人的特点，是差别塑造了优势与成功，差别同样带给人以弱势和失败。雄鹰拥有强壮的身体，成为蓝天的霸主，但一只乌鸦却想将自己和它相提并论，结果麻烦缠身，连自由都被剥夺。隔行如隔山，贸然尝试扮演自己不熟悉的角色反而会遭遇失败，这就需要我们认识到自己的长处，认清自己的角色。

认清角色，可以避免自己走向雷池。松下电器是国际的大品牌，但就是这样一个商业帝国，几十年来却拿不出一样独创的产品。到底是什么促成了它的成功。原来松下电器的智囊团们认识到研发新产品，必定要投入大量的财力物力人力，这全使公司走向风险的风口浪尖。而日本就是一个以改造作为重要生产手段的国家，松下电器集团几乎是凭着不断买进专利，不断改造与创新旧产品，成就了这一电器巨头，而避免了与其他公司科技上的较量的劣势。

认清角色，可以改变人生，走向成功。鲁迅的老本行是医学，他一度认为东亚病夫的劣根在于身体，所以他一心赴洋潜心医学寻找拯救国民的途径，但他看见中国人在纷扬的战火前的怯懦与无知时，他毅然弃医从文。鲁迅之所以为鲁迅，就是他认清了自己的角色，从而用一支笔托起了中国的脊梁。还有被人们熟知的李开复。他多年以来辗转于美国各大科技公司：苹果，微软，谷歌……每每有所建树，他没有选择继续留守而决定继续奔波。有人问他原因，他说：“我只是希望世界因我而不同，不是墨守成规。”所以李开复一直执著于实现自己的人生价值而改变着自己的角色，成了中国经济商业的领军人物。

认清自己的角色，就像在卷帙浩繁的书架上寻找一本属于自己的书。那书会告诉你如何用你的方法去获得人生的道路。那本书会教导你在生活中所遵守的信条，像不为五斗米折腰而归隐山林的陶渊明，像穿梭于下层社会而又揭露社会的高尔基，他们都认清了自己的角色，最后在历史的长河之中，散发着耀眼的光芒。

请记住，“认清角色”将是每一个人一生的镜子，随时拿出来看看，里面映着你的脸，一个真实的你。
