The existence of the oceans allowed the first life to form, grow, and reproduce. T he oceans create atmosphere, weather, and climate. They supply the world with an abundance of life, much of which sup plies humans, among others, with transp ortation, food, medicines, and recreation . While other species may enjoy the ben efits of the oceans, humans have becom e so wide spread and detached from the world around them that they have effect ively brought the oceans to the brink of extinction in a very short time (Woodard, 2000). While the oceans count time in th e billions of years, humans count time in years or decades. In the last fifteen deca des, human activity has decimated a sig nificant portion of the ocean, creating "d ead zones" where there is no oxygen to support life. My Hometown

My hometown is beautiful place It stands near a wide river at the foot of low GREen hills. It has many tall buildings and wide streets. There are trees and flowers everywhere.

But it has not always been like that. In the old days, it was a sad dirty little town. Landlords and merchants lived in the few good houses. For the working people there were only dark, unhealthy rooms in old buildings and huts in narrow muddy streets. Nearly everyone was poor and many had no work.

Everything has changed since liberation. The people, led by the Party, have got rid of the mud and dirt. They have put up schools, theaters, shops and flats. They have an assembly hall and a hospital. Along the river they have built offices, hotels and parks. A lot of factories have sprung up. On the river, streamers and boats come and go busily, day and night. They carry the products of our industries to all parts of the country.

浓浓的年味早在“祭灶”时弥漫开来。老家人到春节，最不可缺的就是三大样，烧“香”，串门，和看戏了。最吸引我的，还是那一支支能点上十二小时的巨大的香。

老家的香可太绝了，它不仅个头大（高约150厘米），且防水又耐用。这种香并不执著于暗紫的颜色，工匠们灵巧的双手用金黄的银粉绘制出手一条盘旋着的龙，更在龙鳞上下足了功夫，凹凸不平，有起有落，龙的神态更是异常逼真，正要向你扑过来似的，两端还用橙红色镶上了“吉祥”二字。

据爷爷辈的老人说，晚上点着这么一支，它便会像秦叔宝和尉迟恭一样，整晚护着你，一年到头平平安安的。这香一户在春节期间通常备三支，除夕夜，初一夜晚，正月十五晚各一支。这香最有特点的地方还是它特有的香味。它丝毫不像平时的短短的那种香，点燃时散出一丝丝黑烟，而是略有一点儿好闻。爷爷笑眯眯地告诉我：“这香的寓意可多了，他让孩子们能够安心，辟邪，用处多了去了。”

随着第一支香在除夕之夜燃烧为灰烬，农历新年的第一天———初一就来了。这时，第二项必不可少的礼节-----串门压岁，便取代了一切。正所谓“一方风俗养育一方人”，老家的串门并不只是双手抱拳行个礼，说声：“新年好。”或“恭喜发财”。还要用这儿产的福橘和包给主人家压岁压惊。这不，我起床没多久，就有人上门拜年了。

这时候的主人家更不能小气了，你越是热情，越好客，自己和来客也高兴。第一个来拜年的是邻家的姆姆，我小时候可没少受她关照，她来给我们压岁，我可要好好招待她。姆姆前脚刚踏进屋里，我就迎了上去，脸上瞬间挤满了笑容，我的第一个动作就是接过姆姆递过来的一袋“压岁礼品”，我知道，这也是一种礼貌。我将袋子拿进屋里后，连忙请姆姆上座。自己则忙不迭的给客人沏茶，瓜子糖果茶面包甘蔗桔子梨样样不能小气，因为来串门的人越多，表示你人缘好，况且这也是祝福的到来。姆姆高兴地喝完茶后，我见缝插针的与她聊起了家常。她很高兴，虽然席间我们的交流语言不是很通畅，也通过比比划划来交流，可是，老家人主客之间的热情与朴素却是挡不住的滚滚而来，温彻心扉。

初六这天，家家户户都兴致勃勃的谈论着下午三点，雷打不动的巡演戏。

下午两点半，我们早早来到祠堂，容纳一千人的大厅座无虚席，来自东湖镇各个村的老戏迷，小戏迷们坐拥一堂，好不热闹！

这场戏给我留下最深的印象的不仅仅是演员们精彩的打斗，更是老家人对中国古老的戏剧文化的一种热爱与推崇。

在一本杂志书上，我看到这样一则小故事：公共浴室里，一位老人被自己的儿子搀扶坐下。儿子低声说：“爸，我先脱，等一下我帮你。”老人点点头，安静地坐着。这时，旁边有人说：“老人衣服多，托起来慢，你应该先帮他。”那儿子正色道：“让老人等我，岂不是把老人冻着了?”一时间浴室里安静得出奇。

短短几句不起眼的话，却衬托出儿子对父亲的关心，也在不经意间透出了一份感动!
