羿上射九日、下除六害，尧和普天下的人民感激不已，颂扬他的歌谣在民间四处传唱，但是，羿的心头却沉甸甸的，自己毕竟射杀了天帝的九个太阳儿子，不知道天帝能否原谅。羿特地宰了在桑林捕获的大野猪，把猪肉剁得细细的，制成肉膏，恭恭敬敬地端上天庭奉献给帝喾，想看一看帝喾对他的态度改变了没有，是否对他依旧亲密，依旧信任。

帝喾看也不看猪肉膏，闷闷不乐：“我不愿再看见杀生的事，也不愿再看见你。你和你的妻子住到下方去吧。”

羿谪居下界，夫妻俩成了凡人，他深感对不住妻子，便与嫦娥商议：“天上等级森严，在人间倒也逍遥自在。不过凡人终将一死，若要长生，就必须渡弱水，翻火山，登上昆仑，去向西王母求取不死灵药。”

西王母原来住在西方玉山的山顶洞穴里，有三只红脑袋、黑眼睛的青鸟轮番外出给她寻找食物，她长着老虎的牙齿、豹子的尾巴，披头散发，却佩戴玉簪，每当晨昏，踞于山头狂嘶猛吼。她掌管天灾、瘟疫、刑罚，也炼制、收藏不死灵药。黄帝退隐九重天外，西王母便迁居昆仑山，那时的她已化身为雍容华贵、仪态端庄的贵夫人。

昆仑山下有弱水环绕，弱水非但不能载舟，一片鸟羽落下亦会沉没。弱水外又有炎火之山，山上的火焰昼夜不息。羿凭着盖世神力、超人意志，越过炎山、弱水，攀上一万三千一百一十三步二尺六寸高的悬崖峭壁，在昆仑山巅的宫殿里拜见了西王母。

西王母钦佩羿的作为，同情羿的遭遇，取药慷慨相赠：“不死药是用不死树结的不死果炼制的。不死树三千年开一次花，三千年结一次果，炼制成药又需三千年。我收藏的药丸仅剩一颗了，两人分享俱可长生不老，一人独食即能升天成仙。”

羿如愿以偿，欢喜无限，回来与嫦娥约定，在结婚周年的日子共享灵药。常言道：人往高处走，水往低处流。神仙也未能免俗。嫦峨经受不住天堂生活的诱惑，趁羿夜出待猎，独自吞下了药丸。

奇迹果真发生了，嫦娥渐觉身子失重，双脚离地，不由自主地飘出窗户，像氢气球一般冉冉飘升。上哪儿去呢?嫦娥思忖着：我背弃了丈夫，天庭诸神一定会责备我，嘲笑我;不如投奔月亮女神常羲，在月宫暂且安身。

嫦娥飘至月宫，才发现那儿出奇的冷清，空无一人。“嫦娥应悔偷灵药，碧海青天夜夜心”(唐.李商隐《嫦娥》)，她在漫漫长夜中咀嚼着孤独、悔恨的滋味，慢慢地竟化成了月精白蛤蟆。
