雍正对道教修炼的丹药，非常感兴趣，在宫中蓄养道士为他炼丹。他亲自用朱笔书写密折数份，特谕一些地方心腹要员："留心访问，深达修养性命之人或道士。如果能找到，一定要耐心开导，不可强迫，并相赠重金来安顿他的家人。对本人更要优礼荣待，迅速派车护送来京;朕有用处，一定要博问广访，竭力为朕寻找。"为了消除诸大臣的疑虑，他同时说"即使送来的人没有本领，朕也不怪罪。朕自有试用的方法。"诸大臣接到如此上谕，又怎敢怠慢，纷纷推荐道士进京。

这些道士之中，他赞赏的是紫阳真人，说他所著的《悟真篇》，阐明了金丹的真谛，堪称"神仙"。雍正还写过许多歌颂道士采药、炼丹、放鹤的诗句。在他的《御制诗集》中。就有这样一首描写炼丹的诗："铅砂和药物，松柏绕云坛;炉运阴阳火，功兼内外丹。光芒冲斗耀，灵异卫龙蟠;自觉仙胎熟，天符降紫鸾。"描绘出一幅生动的宫中炼丹图。

雍正服食丹药，除治病外，更重要的是补充元气的济丹，从不间断。他曾将济丹赏赐给心腹鄂尔泰和田文镜吃。说济丹是"经过精心炼制，不论寒热温凉，效果殊异，确是一种有益无害的良药，尽管放胆服用，不必有所怀疑。"

雍正十三年八月二十三日，雍正帝仓促驾崩。雍正驾崩后只隔一天，即八月二十五日，新君乾隆就下谕旨，驱逐炼丹道士张太虚、王定乾等人出宫，称他们是"市井无赖之徒，最好造谣出事"。并将所有炼丹原料清运出宫。

滥设名目，强收杂费，这是历朝贪官污吏惯用的发财之道，清朝尤其严重。清世宗雍正帝把禁绝地方官员乱收杂费作为治吏安民的内容之一，倾力整顿，颇见成效。

地方杂费有不少是相沿成习的。如奉天府，老百姓做生意的时候如果有车辆进出，就要到奉天府衙门领取照票，边门验票放行，小车一辆收银十六钱，大车一辆收银三十二钱，每年都收两千两左右，此项银两均被府尹、书吏、经历司查验等官员分掉。另外，有猪羊贩卖进出也要按照每口三钱收费。由于官吏的勒索，致使边口地带物价腾贵。

此事被巡察奉天的御史释迦保查实之后奏报给了朝廷，雍正帝立即下令严行查禁。奉天府府尹杨超曾遵奉谕旨，立即将车辆及猪羊收费项目尽行革除，不许再索取分文，雍正帝夸赞他办理得"非常及时，应该表彰"。在许多地方，给官员送礼长期盛行，如到任礼、端午礼、生日礼、阅城礼、盘库礼等等，不胜枚举，这些东西上司一但收受，属员势必加征税课于人民，并且日后遇有请托便难拒绝，危害极大。在雍正帝的谕令下，各地规礼尽被裁革。

因为有感于争储斗争的残酷，雍正即位后首先做的事，便是想出一个立储的新法子。一天，他召集五大臣及满汉文武官员去乾清宫商议hx事。他坐在龙椅上，对众大臣说："父皇在世时，曾立二阿哥为太子，后来废而又立，立而又废。父皇晚年，常为此闷闷不乐。朕想到，立储乃国家大计，不立不好，明立又不好，你们有何妙策?"大臣们面面相觑，半晌，齐声奏道："臣等愚昧，凭圣上意愿定夺便是!"雍正帝又说道："朕以为，立皇太子与一般政事不同。一般政治须劳大臣们一起商量而定，立太子的事，做君王的理应独断专行。譬如朕目下有好几个皇子，倘让众大臣议定，则众口必不一致，让朕难以定夺。何况，明立太子，免不了兄弟争夺，惹出祸端，因此朕再三筹划，想出了一个变通法子，朕私下拟定皇储为谁，写在诏书上，密封收进匣内。"说到这里，雍正帝把头向上一抬，手朝上面一指，说，"匣子就安放在这块正大光明匾额的后面。你们说这样可好?"大臣们一听，异口同声回答道："皇上思虑如此周详，臣下岂有异议?"当下，雍正帝便命众大臣退出殿去，只留下事务大臣在内，他亲手密书皇太子的名字，封藏在匣内，又命侍卫攀缘木梯而上，把这锦匣安放在匾额后面。从此以后，代代清帝都照雍正的做法，把皇太子名字藏在"正大光明"的匾额后面，于是清帝传位才避免了宫廷内乱。
