这时候，暗藏的气味声律系统(odorophonics)开始朝着大草原中央的夫妻俩吹起一阵夹带着各种气味的微风。火热的麦秆闻起来像狮子草，清爽的绿色有着阴凉水潭的味道;加上带有铁锈味的浓烈动物体臭，仿佛在空气中撒满了红椒粉的尘埃味。此外还有各种声音：远方羚羊的足蹄踩着泥草地的蹬蹬闷响，秃鹰群的窸窣骚动声。一团黑影在空中掠过，影子在乔治·哈德利仰起的脸上晃了几下。

“讨厌的东西。”他听见妻子说。

“是秃鹰。”

“你看，那里有一群狮子，在草原那儿。它们正准备走回水潭。它们刚刚才吃饱了，”莉迪娅说，“不知道他们吃了什么。”

“别的野兽吧。”乔治·哈德利眯着眼睛，举起手来遮蔽酷热的阳光。“也许是斑马或者小长颈鹿。”

“真的?”他妻子紧张兮兮。

“难说。不过，现在谈这个也未免太迟了，”他笑了笑，“那里只剩一堆白骨了，还有那些冲下来捡食残余的秃鹰。”

“你听见尖叫声吗?”她问。

“没有。”

“大约一分钟前?”

“抱歉，没听见。”

那群狮子走了过来。乔治·哈德利不得不再度佩服起当初设计这房间的机械天才。这样的效能奇迹，要价却相当低廉，每个家庭都该安装一套才对。当然了，偶尔你也会为它们那科学的精确性感到吃惊，你会被吓一跳，心头猛一震，不过，多数时候，它们带来的是一种人人向往的趣味，不只是对你的孩子而言，也包括你自己，尤其当你突然想体验异国风情、转换一下景致的时候。瞧，得来全不费工夫!

眼前出现的是狮子，就在十五英尺外，那么逼真，热腾腾活生生的。你仿佛可以触摸到它们尖刺的毛发;你嘴里似乎充满它们那热烫皮肤所发散的带着尘埃味的皮革气息;它们身上的黄色看来就像是精致的法国织锦，跟夏季枯草的色调如此协调;狮子缠结的肺囊在寂寥正午的吸气声清晰可闻;还有它们那滴着唾涎的嘴巴里伴着喘息飘散的兽肉气味。

狮群站在那儿，恐怖的绿黄色眼珠瞪着乔治和莉迪娅。

“小心!”莉迪娅尖叫。

狮群冲着他们跑过来。

莉迪娅立刻逃开。乔治也本能地跟在她后头狂奔。到了外面走廊，砰一声关上房门，他大笑起来，她却哭个不停。两人站在那儿，为对方的反应惊愕不已。

“乔治!”

“莉迪娅!啊，我亲爱的、可怜又可爱的莉迪娅!”

“我们差点被追上了!”

“只是墙壁，莉迪娅，要记得，那只不过是水晶墙壁罢了。当然，我得承认，它们实在太逼真了——非洲就在我们家客厅——可是那些都是超动感、超灵敏的三围空间彩色影片和心理录音纪录片，全都只是气味声律和音响效果啊，莉迪娅。手帕拿去吧。”

“我好害怕，”她走向他，依偎在他怀里，呜呜地啜泣起来，“你看见没有?你感觉到了吗?好像真的喔。”

“好啦，莉迪娅……”

“你一定要告诉温迪和彼得，不要再想非洲的事了。”

“好——好。”他拍抚着她。

“一定?”

“当然。”

“把育儿房上锁几天，等我情绪平稳了再说。”

“你又不是不清楚，彼得对这种事有多敏感。一个月前，我为了惩罚他，把育儿房上锁了几小时，结果他闹翻了天!温迪也一样。育儿房是他们的宝贝。”

“非上锁不可，没得通融。”

“好吧。”他不情愿地把那扇巨大的门关上，“你工作太辛苦了，需要休息一下。”

“我不知道——真的不知道。”她长叹一口气，找了张椅子坐下。椅子立刻摇晃起来，感觉很舒适。“也许我还不够忙。也许我太空闲了，才会胡思乱想。我们把整间房子的装置关闭一段时间，过几天正常生活，好不好?”

“你是说，你愿意亲手为我炒蛋?”

“对啊。”她点点头。

“还有缝我的袜子?”

“嗯。”她慌乱地点着头，眼泪汪汪。

“还有打扫整间屋子?”

“是的。是——我愿意!”

“可是我记得，我们买这所房子的目的，不就是为了可以不必动手做家务事吗?”

“问题就出在这里。我没有了归属感。房子已经是妻子、母亲兼保姆。我怎么跟非洲大草原竞争?我替孩子们洗澡、刷洗身体的效率和速度，怎么比得上那座自动刷洗浴缸?根本没得比。不只是我，你也一样。你最近也是烦躁不安。”

“我想我大概是烟抽得太凶了。”

“你在这屋子里也是一副不知所措的样子。跟以前比起来，你每天早上抽烟抽得更凶了，下午喝更多的酒，晚上也得吃更多镇静剂。你也开始觉得自己没用了。”

“是吗?”他犹豫着，尝试深入自己内心的真实感受。

“唉，乔治!”她望着他背后的育儿房门，“那些狮子不会跑出来吧?”

他望着房门，发现它在颤动，好像被什么东西从里面用力推撞着。

“当然不会。”他说。

晚上只有夫妻俩一起用餐，因为温迪和彼得进城参加一场特殊造型嘉年华去了，还传了视频回来，说他们会晚点回家，请双亲别等他们吃饭。此刻，乔治·哈德利坐在那里，出神地望着餐桌从它的内部机械装置吐出一盘盘温热的食物。

“漏了西红柿酱。”他说。

“抱歉。”一个细小的声音从餐桌内传出，接着送出西红柿酱。

至于育儿房，乔治·哈德利心想，既然上了锁，便暂时伤害不了孩子们。任何事情，过了头都不是好现象。而孩子们显然花太多时间想非洲的事了。那轮太阳，他仍然能感觉到，它晒在他脖子上，就像只炽热的爪子。还有那群狮子，以及鲜血的气味。奇妙的是，育儿房能够捕捉孩子们的心念所发射的电波，然后创造出生动的影像来满足他们的所有欲念。孩子们想到狮子，就真的出现了狮子。孩子们想到斑马，就出现了斑马。要太阳，有太阳。要长颈鹿，有长颈鹿。要死亡，有死亡。

这最后一项是个问题。他无味地嚼着餐桌替他切好的肉块。关于死亡的意念，温迪和彼得还那么幼小，不该想到死亡的事。或者，并非如此。其实这种事永远不嫌早，也许早在你明白死亡是怎么回事之前，你就曾经希望某个人死掉。例如，你两岁那年用纸弹玩具枪对着人猛射的时候。

可是，像这样——在酷热的非洲大草原中——惨死于狮子的利牙，而且一再上演，似乎不像是开玩笑。

“你要去哪里?”

乔治没回答莉迪娅，只是出神地朝育儿房悄悄走过去，一路让前方的灯微微亮起，接着在他背后熄灭。他贴着房门聆听。远远的，有只狮子在吼叫。

他开了锁，打开房门。就在进门前，他听见远远的一声尖叫，紧接着一声来自狮群的狂吼，然后便安静下来。

他一脚踏进非洲。几年来，他曾经无数次打开这道房门，发现里头的爱丽丝梦游仙境、大海龟、阿拉丁神灯、南瓜头杰克、怪医杜立德，还有从一轮无比真实的月亮飞跃过去的乳牛——这都是属于童话世界的各种奇妙事物。不知多少次，他看见飞马在幻化成天空的天花板上翱翔，还有宛如喷泉的红色烟火，或者听见天使的歌声。如今，却是炙热的非洲荒漠，一个在热浪中上演着杀戮事件的大烤炉。也许莉迪娅说得对，也许他们需要休息一阵子，远离这些幻境;对十岁的孩子来说，这些景致实在太赤裸裸了。运用想象力的训练来锻炼头脑是件好事，可是当孩子的幻想老是绕着某个模式打转……过去一个月来，他有好几次隐约听见远方传来狮吼声，甚至闻到它们那浓烈的气味一路飘向他的书房门口。可是他太忙了，没怎么放在心上。

乔治·哈德利独自站在非洲的大草原上。猎食中的狮群纷纷抬起头，注视着他。这场逼真幻境的唯一漏洞是敞开的房门，他可以从那儿看见他妻子在黑暗走廊的那端，像幅照片似的，出神地吃着晚餐。

“走开。”他对那群狮子说。

没有反应。

他非常清楚这房间的规则。你发射你的意志。无论你想什么，都会成真。

“阿拉丁神灯快出现。”他大声说。

那篇大莽原毫无变化，狮群也还在那儿。

“快啊，臭房间!我要阿拉丁!”他说。

他回到餐桌前。“那蠢房间竟然不听话，”他说，“没反应。”

“也许它没办法反应，”莉迪娅说，“因为孩子们最近老想着非洲、狮子和杀戮的事，那房间已经积习难改了。”

“大概吧!”

“或者是因为，彼得做了设定，让它维持现状。”

“设定?”

“说不定他打开过它的机械装置，偷偷修改了。”

“彼得根本不懂机械的东西。”

“他比谁都聪明，他的智商——”

“可是——”

“你好，妈妈。你好，爸爸。”

哈德利夫妇转过头去。温迪和彼得踏进家门，脸颊光滑得犹如薄荷糖，眼珠像玛瑙大理石般晶亮，两人的连身背心娃娃装散发着直升机之旅残留的清新气息。

“你们刚好赶上吃晚餐。”夫妻俩说。

“我们吃了好多草莓冰淇淋和热狗，”两个孩子手牵手说，“不过我们可以坐下来看你们吃。”

“好，过来告诉爸妈育儿房的事。”乔治·哈德利说。

兄妹俩朝他眨了眨眼，然后对望了一下。“育儿房?”

“就是非洲草原什么的。”做父亲的假装快活地说。

“让温迪去看一下，再回来告诉我们。”彼得说。

“不需要她来告诉我。我看过了。”

“你一定是弄错了，父亲。”

“我没有，彼得。我们去瞧瞧吧。”

这时候温迪回来了。“不是非洲啊。”她喘着气说。

“我们一起去看个清楚。”乔治·哈德利说。于是一家人通过走廊，打开育儿房门。

里头是一片美丽的翠绿色森林，一条美丽的河流，一座紫色山丘，还有嘹亮的歌声;神秘迷人的印第安少女在树林间跳跃，成群的蝴蝶随着她的长发飘飞，犹如舞动的花束。那片非洲莽原消失了，狮群也不见了。房里只有印第安少女，正唱着一首引人落泪的美丽歌曲。

乔治·哈德利探头望着已然改变的景致。“回房睡觉去。”他对孩子们说。

两个孩子张大了嘴。

“别装作没听见。”他说。

他们走到抽风室，一股风流将他们像落叶似的往上一吸，顺着风管送到他们的睡房。

乔治· 哈德利越过那片充满歌声的林间绿地，在先前狮子聚集的位置附近捡起一样东西。他缓缓走回妻子身边。

“什么东西?”她问。

“我的一只旧皮夹。”他说。

他拿给她看。上面还沾着温热青草和狮子的气味，还有几滴唾液，显然被嚼过了，两侧甚至还黏着几抹血迹。

他关上育儿房门，牢牢上了锁。

半夜，他仍然醒着。他知道妻子同样睡不着。“你想，会不会是温迪修改的?”她终于开口。房里一片黑暗。

“还用说吗!”

“把大莽原变成森林，用印第安少女取代狮子?”

“没错。”

“为什么呢?”

“我也不知道。反正得等我查出个究竟之后，那个房间才能再打开。”

“你的皮夹怎么会跑到那里面?”

“你又问倒我了，”他说，“我只知道一件事：我已经开始后悔给他们购置那个房间了。要是孩子们有一点神经质，像那样的房间——”

“那房间应该是有益孩子健康，能帮助他们克服神经质才对。”

“我开始怀疑它的功能了。”他盯着天花板说。

“他们要什么我们就给什么。看看我们得到什么回报——耍神秘，顽抗不从?”

“是谁说过‘孩子就像地毯，必须经常踩一踩’?我们从来就舍不得打他们。老实说，他们太任性了，来去全看他们高兴，而且当我们是小孩似的。他们太娇宠，我们太放任。”

“自从几个月前你禁止他们搭火箭去纽约之后，他们就一直在闹别扭。”

“他们还太小，不能参加那种旅行，这我解释过了呀!”

“可是我注意到了，从那时候起，他们就决心跟我们对抗到底。”

“我想明天我还是请戴维·麦克林过来一趟，要他看一下非洲。”

“可是非洲已经不见了，现在是绿野仙境和印第安少女了。”

“我感觉，到了明天一定又会变回非洲。”

片刻后，他们听见尖叫声。

两声。是从楼下传来的人声。接着是一阵狮吼。

“温迪和彼得不在他们的睡房里。”他妻子说。

他躺在床上，心怦怦地跳。“糟了，”他说，“他们跑进育儿房了。”

“那两声尖叫——很耳熟。”

“是吗?”

“是啊，非常耳熟。”

尽管他们的床努力地摇，一小时过去了，还是无法将这两个大人摇入梦乡。夜色中弥漫着一股猫科动物的气味。

“父亲?”彼得说。

“什么事?”

彼得低头盯着鞋子。他很久不曾正眼看父亲一下了，还有母亲。“你不会一直把育儿房上锁吧，会吗?”

“这得看情况。”

“什么情况?”彼得问。

育儿房传出一声可怕的尖叫。

“就这个，”乔治·哈德利说，“看你能观察出什么来。”

“当时我只觉得，你太宠你的小孩了。可是现在他们却对你很不满。怎么回事?”

“我不准他们去纽约。”

“还有呢?”

“我把几台电器搬了出去，一个月前还威胁他们说，要是他们不好好做功课，我就把育儿房给关闭。后来我真的把它关闭了好几天，让他们知道我不是说着玩的。”

“哈，哈!”

“这么做有关系吗?”

“关系可大呢。他们本来拥有的圣诞老人，如今却变成了吝啬鬼。孩子们当然比较喜欢圣诞老人了。你让这房间取代了你和你妻子在孩子心中的地位。对他们来说，这房间是母亲，也是父亲，在他们生活中的分量远远超过真正的双亲。现在你却要把它给关闭，也难怪他们会恨你。看那片天空，就可以感觉得出来。还有那太阳。你必须改变一下你的生活，乔治。你跟许多人一样，太依赖人造装置带来的舒适了。要是明天你厨房里的什么电器出了问题，你就得饿肚子了，你连打个蛋都不会。所以，把所有机器都关掉吧。现在就关。这需要一点时间适应。可是顶多花个一年，我们一定能把孩子们教好的，你等着瞧吧。”

“可是，对孩子们来说，把育儿房永远关闭，这冲击会不会太大了些?”

“我只是不希望他们愈陷愈深。”

狮群已享受完一顿红色飨宴。

它们站在林间空地边缘，盯着这两个男人。

他们一起来到保险丝盒前，将开关一扳，终结了育儿房。

两个孩子闹得天翻地覆。他们不停尖叫，耍脾气，乱丢东西，又哭又吼，还骂人，在家具上跳来跳去。

“你们不可以这样对育儿房，不可以!”

“好啦，孩子们。”

小孩们扑倒在沙发上，悲伤地大哭。

“乔治，”莉迪娅说，“把育儿房打开，几分钟就好，这样太突然了。”

“不行。”

“你不能这么霸道。”

“莉迪娅，已经关上，就不会再打开了。这屋子里的所有装置也要马上关闭。我越看咱们买来的这一大批家当，就越觉得讨厌。我们在这些机械电子玩意儿上投注太多心力了。老天，我们真需要呼吸一点淳朴的空气啊!”

他说完便走到屋子各处，把语音时钟、电炉、电暖器和自动擦鞋、系鞋带、擦澡、拖地的机器，以及所有他够得着的电器全部切断电源。

屋子里仿佛躺满了尸体，感觉犹如一座机械的坟墓，静得可怕。机器内部那些静候着按键声啪嗒一响而启动的潜藏能量，如今一丝都听不见。

“别听爸妈的话!”彼得朝着天花板哀号，仿佛在对育儿房说话那样。“别让父亲害死你们!”接着他转身对他的父亲说：“啊，我讨厌你!”

“再怎么骂我也没用的。”

“希望你死掉!”

“我是死了很长一段时间没错。现在我们要真正开始生活了。我们要活起来，而不是把自己交给机器去处置操弄。”

温迪仍然哭个不停，彼得也跟着大哭起来。“再玩一分钟，一分钟就好，让我们再玩一下育儿房啦!”他们泪流满面地哀求。

“唉，乔治，”莉迪娅说，“应该问题不大吧。”

“好吧——好吧，但是要马上关闭。注意，只能玩一分钟，然后就要永远关起来。”

“爸爸真好，爸爸真好!”孩子们尖叫起来，破涕为笑。

“然后我们要出发去旅行。半小时后戴维·麦克林会过来帮我们搬家，然后送我们去机场。我要去换衣服了。一分钟后你们必须把育儿房给关上。莉迪娅，记得喔，一分钟。”

三人交头接耳地离去，乔治则搭乘风管上楼，开始更衣。一分钟后，莉迪娅也上楼来。

“无所谓了。再过五分钟咱们就要出发去爱荷华州。老天，当初我们怎么会搬进这里的?为什么买了这么可怕的房子呢?”

“虚荣，金钱，愚蠢。”

“我们最好赶紧下楼去，免得孩子们又被那些野兽给迷昏了头。”

他们沿着风管下了楼，跑着通过走廊。可是不见两个孩子的踪影。“温迪?彼得?”

他们跑进育儿房。那片大莽原空荡荡的，只剩几只狮子在那里，冲着他们张望。“彼得?温迪?”

这时，房门砰地关上。

“温迪，彼得!”

乔治·哈德利和他的妻子惊慌地转身，往门口急奔。

“开门!”乔治·哈德利大叫，努力转动着门钮。“糟糕，门从外面锁上了!彼得!”他敲打着门板，“快开门啊!”

他紧贴着房门，听见门外响起彼得的声音。

“别让他们把育儿房还有整个家关掉。”

乔治·哈德利夫妇用力敲门。“好啦，别闹了，孩子们。我们该出发了，麦克林先生马上就要来了，而且……”

接着，他们听见一阵响动。

大莽原上，狮群正从三个方向，踏着干黄的草地靠近过来，喉咙里咕噜噜地发出低吼。

狮子。

乔治看了妻子一眼，两人转身，和那群野兽对望。它们缓缓逼近，蹲伏着，尾巴竖起。

乔治夫妇惊叫起来。

他们突然明白了，先前他们听见的那些尖叫声为何会那么耳熟。

“我来啦!”戴维·麦克林出现在育儿房门口。“嗨，你们好。”他向两个孩子招呼道。他们正坐在那片林间绿地的中央，像野餐那样吃着简单的午饭。他们背后是水潭和黄色的莽原，头顶一轮火热的太阳。他开始冒汗。“爸爸妈妈呢?”

孩子们抬头，微笑着说：“噢，他们马上就来。”

“很好，我们该出发了。”麦克林远远看见一群狮子挥舞着爪子互相缠斗，随后便恢复平静，开始在树荫下大嚼起来。

他举手遮着太阳，眯眼望向那群狮子。

这时狮群已填饱肚子，转往水潭去喝水。

麦克林先生的脸上掠过一抹黑影，接着更多阴影闪过，一群秃鹰从耀眼的天空俯冲而下。

“要喝茶吗?”一片沉寂中，温迪问他。

Recent years have seen a tendency in China that tourism is growing faster. According to a recent survey made by some experts, about 47% urban residents travel regularly, and 28% rural residents also make their tour across the country. The survey also shows that more people are interested in tourism, and will join the army in the future.

Facing this tendency, we can’t help exploring some underlying factors that are responsible. In the very first place, with the policy of reform and opening up, Chinese people’s living standard has been greatly improved, and therefore, most of them can afford to travel around. What’s more, it is believed that people now take a more positive attitude to tourism, and regard it as a life style. In addition, tourism facilities are becoming better and better. For example, transportation develops fast, and many scenic spots are available now.

Most westerners always celebrate Christmas Day as their major festival, in

order to memorialize Jesus. During that time, they always have several days off,

Oceans becoming more acidicThe worlds oceans are slowly getting more acidic, say scientists.The researchers from California say the change is taking place in response to higher levels of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere.The lowering of the waters pH value is not great at the moment but could pose a serious threat to current marine life if it continues, they warn.Ken Caldeira and Michael Wickett, from the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, report their concerns in the journal Nature.Increasing use of fossil fuels means more carbon dioxide is going into the air, and most of it will eventually be absorbed by seawater.

Once in the water, it reacts to form carbonic acid.Scientists believe that the oceans have already become slightly more acidic over the last century.But these researchers have tried to predict what will happen in the future by combining what we know about the history of the oceans with computer models of climate change."This level of acidity will get much more extreme in the future if we continue releasing CO2 into the atmosphere," said Dr Caldeira."And we predicted amounts of future acidity that exceed anything we saw over the last several hundred million years, apart from perhaps after rare catastrophic events such as asteroid impacts."If carbon dioxide release continues unabated, ocean pH could be reduced by as much as 0.77 units, the authors warn.It is not absolutely clear what that means for marine life, however.

Most organisms live near the surface, where the greatest pH change would be expected to occur, but deep-ocean lifeforms may be more sensitive to pH changes.Coral reefs and other organisms whose skeletons or shells contain calcium carbonate may be particularly affected, the team speculate. They could find it much more difficult to build these structures in water with a lower pH.In recent years some people have suggested deliberately storing carbon dioxide from power stations in the deep ocean as a way of curbing global warming.But Dr Caldeira said that such a strategy should now be re-considered."Previously, most experts had looked at ocean absorption of carbon dioxide as a good thing - because in releasing CO2 into the atmosphere we warm the planet; and when CO2 is absorbed by the ocean, it reduces the amount of greenhouse warming.
