辛格关于帮助别人的观点中隐含了一个前提，即你知道如何去做。在你不会游泳的前提下，甘愿牺牲一件衣服的道德准则便显得苍白无力。正因如此，在《你能拯救的生命》(The Life You Can Save)一书中，辛格不辞辛苦地为读者列举了很多实例，告诉他们可以在哪些地方伸出援手。在辛格的网站上，这部分内容是定期更新的，尼古拉斯·克里斯托弗和舍丽·吴顿也是这样做的。道理很简单，只谈世界上存在什么问题，而不去谈可行的解决方案，这样只能导致社会瘫痪，而非进步。

只要拿出约10美元，一个家庭就能得到一个经过杀虫剂处理的蚊帐，还会有人教他们怎样使用这种蚊帐。政府或非政府组织是否应向家长们免费提供这种蚊帐?或者按优惠价卖给他们?还是让他们自己去市场上按全价购买?这些问题是可以回答的，但答案却不甚明了。很多“专家”在这些问题上的立场十分强硬，却拿不出任何有力的证据。

疟疾是一种传染病，如果玛丽睡在蚊帐中，约翰就不太可能被传染——如果至少有一半人口睡在蚊帐中，另一半人口即使没睡在蚊帐中，他们被传染的概率也会大大降低。问题是，睡在蚊帐中的孩子的人数还不到总人口数的四分之一。对于马里及肯尼亚的很多家庭来说，10美元的花费有些高。考虑到使用者及社区中其他人的利益，以优惠价销售蚊帐或免费赠送蚊帐似乎是个好办法。的确，免费发放蚊帐正是杰弗里·萨克斯所提倡的。埃斯特利和莫约则对此持反对态度。他们认为，如果人们不花钱就得到了蚊帐，那么他们就不会对其加以珍惜，因而也就不会去用。即使他们用了，也可能会因此对施舍习以为常，在以后需要自己花钱购买蚊帐时便会退缩，或是在需要其他物品时也不愿自己花钱，而是等着别人免费赠送。这种情况会摧毁运转良好的市场。据莫约讲，一位蚊帐供应商就曾因一项免费发放蚊帐计划而破产。在该项计划停止之后，再也没有人愿意以任何价格提供蚊帐了。

要想回答这些问题，我们就要观察并比较几组人在面对不同程度优惠价时的行为。这里，我们着重于“比较”，自己花钱购买蚊帐的人与免费得到蚊帐的人相比，他们的表现常常是不一样的。

那些自己花钱购买蚊帐的人可能都比较富有，受过良好的教育，而且知道自己为什么需要这种蚊帐;而那些免费得到蚊帐的人可能是因为贫穷，才会被某家非政府组织选中。不过，情况也可能恰恰相反：免费得到蚊帐的人社会关系优越，而穷人由于封闭只好以全价购买。无论是哪种情况，我们都无法从他们使用蚊帐的方式上得出任何结论。

因此，这些问题最简洁的回答方式就是模仿医学中为评估新药的效力而采用的随机对照实验(RCTs)。洛杉矶加利福尼亚大学的帕斯卡利娜·迪帕在肯尼亚开展了这样一项实验，随后，其他研究人员分别在乌干达和马达加斯加进行了类似的实验。在迪帕的实验中，随机选定的几个人在购买蚊帐时享受了不同程度的价格优惠。通过对几个小组在接受不同价格时的行为进行比较，迪帕便能回答我们前面列出的三个问题，至少在这项实验的背景下是这样的。

As the saying goes, "A friend in need is a friend indeed". Friends play a very essential role in our daily life. However, how to make goods friends is a problem for most of us. As for me, I have three principles to choose friends.

舅舅家和姥姥家隔了一堵墙。

我总是听到朋友们的抱怨，他们说收入太少了，以至于无法收支平衡。刚开始，我会为他们感到遗憾，但是长期下来，我发现他们的工作很轻松，他们在办公室里朝九晚五地坐着，甚至不需要外出跑业务。

然而我看到了另外一个朋友，他很努力工作，工作时间不稳定，有时候甚至于工作到晚上九点。

事实上，他是我朋友之中赚得最多的。没有付出，就没有收获， 确实如此，如果人们想要，需要付出。与其羡慕别人的高收入，不如努力工作来实现我们想要的。成功没有捷径，努力工作是唯一的方法。

Nowadays, pets become so close and friendly to our human-beings that more

and more people enjoy keeping them. Pets can bring them a lot of joys and

happiness, because playing with pets is a good way to communicate with the

nature. Besides, pets can comfort old people who live alone. With the companion

of pets, they won’t feel lonely. Nevertheless, I’m not interested in keeping

pets at all. For one thing, keeping pets is bad for environmental protection,

since pets usually make a lot of noise and contaminate the roads. For another,

the virus carried by pets may cause fatal disease. What’s more, sometimes pets

may attack people when they are unhappy. Consequently, we had better not keep

too many pets, so as to ensure our health and security. Besides, those pet

lovers must take some effective measures to prevent their pets from hurting

people and polluting our environment.
