消息背景，是指新闻事实出现的缘由、环境和主客观条件。背景是一篇消息的有机组成部分，是补充、反衬或烘托新闻事实和新闻主题的重要材料。

我们写新闻人物，必须向读者交代这个人物的经历和社会关系;我们写新闻事件，也必须向读者介绍这一事件的历史条件、自然环境、前因后果与来龙去脉。新闻背景的种类很多，诸如：历史背景、时代背景、政治背景、经济背景、人物背景、地理背景、人文背景、民族背景、知识背景等等。这里介绍几种主要的类型：

2)地理背景。有些新闻涉及国内外的有关城市、地区，而读者不一定知道，有必要适当介绍有关地区的自然环境、风土人情。

3)人物背景。当新闻中出现读者不熟悉的新人物，或者过去熟悉，由于时间久了印象不深的人物，就需要介绍人物的概况，作为背景交代。

4)事物背景。指介绍一些新事物、新成就的有关资料，以帮助读者了解这些事物的意义和它的价值。尤其在科技报道中，对新技术更需要作背景介绍。

交代背景的方式在消息中所起的作用，主要有：

1)说明与解释。通过背景交代正确地揭示原因与结果、现象与本质、全局与局部等。

2)交代与补充。与主要新闻事实有关联的一些材料又不得不加以交代和补充，就得运用背景。

3)衬托与对比。

台湾诗人席慕蓉的这首《一棵开花的树》深受海内外读者喜爱。这是一首女孩子写给男孩子的情诗吗?2007年12月22日，在福建参加“海峡诗会”的席慕蓉披露了作品的创作经过，她说，这是“写给自然界的一首情诗”。

席慕蓉说，在她看来，生命是不断的经过、经过、经过，她写的东西都是在生命现场里所得到的触动，尽管有些触动要等到一二十年后才恍然大悟。

为了解释自己在生命现场里的触动，席慕蓉讲述了《一棵开花的树》的创作过程。她回忆说，当时自己在台湾新竹师范学院教书。5月份有一次坐火车经过苗栗的山间，火车不断从山洞间进出。当火车从一个很长的山洞出来以后，她无意间回头朝山洞后面的山地上张望，看到高高的山坡上有一棵油桐开满了白色的花。“那时候我差点叫起来，我想怎么有这样一棵树，这么慎重地把自己全部开满了花，看不到绿色的叶子，像华盖一样地站在山坡上。可是，我刚要仔细看的时候，火车一转弯，树就看不见了。” 就是这棵真实地存在于席慕蓉生命现场里的油桐，让她念念不忘。她心想，正如海是蓝给自己看一样，花当然也是慎重地开给它自己的，但是，如果没有自己那一回头的机缘，树上的花儿是不是就会纷纷凋零?这促使她写下了《一棵开花的树》。

席慕蓉说：“这是我写给自然界的一首情诗。我在生命现场遇见了一棵开花的树，我在替它发声。”至于有些人把作品解读成“女孩子站在那里等男孩子看她”的情诗，她表示“有点犹疑”。但她同时声明，诗人的解读只是其中的一种，因为读者的解释也有权威性。
