阿尔萨斯-洛林接受了法国大革命的洗礼，《马赛曲》首次唱响于斯特拉斯堡市。在拿破仑1814年前敕封的24名法籍法国元帅（法军军衔最高级别）中，阿尔萨斯人两名，洛林德语区一名，占总数的八分之一。这种“民族是德意志日耳曼民族、但是语言、生活方式、高雅艺术已经法国化”的情形为日后的战争埋下伏笔。

1871年，普法战争结束，法方惨败，法兰西第二帝国皇帝拿破仑三世被俘，普鲁士国王威廉一世在法国巴黎凡尔赛宫镜厅加冕为德意志皇帝威廉一世，并签订《法兰克福条约》，条约规定法国把阿尔萨斯省的大部分与洛林省属下的摩泽尔省割让予德国。至此，阿尔萨斯-洛林区重归德国。

直至1918年11月11日，第一次世界大战结束。1919年6月28日，协约国与同盟国在凡尔赛宫签订和约。《凡尔赛条约》规定，德国将阿尔萨斯-洛林区归还法国，恢复普法战争前的边界。

1940年6月17日，由于法国战役的惨败，法国在六周时间内被纳粹德国征服，法国与纳粹德国和约，和约将阿尔萨斯-洛林区重归于德国直至二战结束。
