因此水利部马上回应称：报道引用数据主要是北方平原地区浅层地下水的监测数据，并非当前地下水饮用水的主要水源。我国地下饮用水水源地水质总体良好，水质达标率在85%左右。咋一看好像互相矛盾，其实是有些媒体对水利部发布的信息“误读了”。

这其中的关键就在于引起广泛关注的数据主要是北方平原地区浅层地下水的监测数据，并不是地下水饮用水水源地的水质数据，地下饮用水水源主要取自深层地下水，也不是浅层地下水。
