《中华人民共和国野生动物保护法》规定珍贵、濒危的陆生、水生野生动物和有益的或者有重要经济、科学研究价值的陆生野生动物受国家法律保护，所以滥食野生动物是违法行为。

国家一级重点保护野生动物有96个种或种类，如大熊猫、金丝猴、中华鲟等。国家二级重点保护野生动物有160个种或种类、如猕猴、黑熊、金猫、黄羊等。
