The earliest known use of the name America is from 1507, when a globe and a large map created by the German cartographer Martin Waldseemüller in Saint-Die-des-Vosges described the combined continents of North and South America. 晁错(前200年—前154年)，汉族，颍川(今河南禹县)人，西汉政治家、文学家。汉文帝时，任太常掌故，后历任太子舍人、博士、太子家令;景帝即位后，任为内史，后迁至御史大夫。

晁错发展了“重农抑商”政策，主张纳粟受爵，增加农业生产，振兴经济;在抵御匈奴侵边问题上，提出“移民实边”的战略思想，建议募民充实边塞，积极备御匈奴攻掠;政治上，进言削藩，剥夺诸侯王的政治特权以巩固中央集权，损害了诸侯利益，以吴王刘濞为首的七国诸侯以“请诛晁错，以清君侧”为名，举兵反叛。景帝听从袁盎之计，腰斩晁错于东市。

晁错的政论文“疏直激切，尽所欲言”，鲁迅称为“西汉鸿文，沾溉后人，其泽甚远”。代表作有《言兵事疏》、《守边劝农疏》、《论贵粟疏》、《贤良对策》等。
