生日到了，她觉得自己的房间太单调了，就向父母要了一只小鸟，作为自己的玩伴，也顺便为房间增添一丝生机。小鸟很便宜，因为它的翅膀有残疾，卖家甚至打算再卖不出去就随手扔掉。小男孩送来的时候，她把它放到了笼子里，这只小鸟是只绿色的虎皮鹦鹉，她把笼子放在桌子上，学疲了，便停下来望望。下午的时候，小鸟会在笼子里跳来跳去，发出悦耳的鸣叫声，晚上小鸟会站在木棍上，把头埋进柔软的羽毛中，安静地进入梦乡。

她忽然找到了乐趣，她发觉在有小鸟的陪伴时光里，狭小的房间似乎不像以前那么压抑了，小鸟跳来跳去的样子也十分可爱。于是，她在每次睡觉前，都会用简短的语言概述小鸟的活动。渐渐地，她发现了，小鸟似乎不只满足于在屋内跳来跳去，它十分渴望飞翔。虽然现在还飞不起来，但它会用力拍着自己的翅膀，它的一切行为让她知道了：它，也有梦!

于是，她试图满足小鸟的愿望，她充满耐心地用药涂抹它的伤。有一天，她突然发现，小鸟的伤好了，并开始长出羽毛，并逐渐尝试飞翔!日复一日，有一次，小鸟居然真的飞起来了!虽然飞得不高，但通过它那欢快的叫声，可以听出来它十分高兴。

正巧学校征文，可以用上鹦鹉的日记。她便心血来潮，写了一篇，经过反复修改，最后居然发表在一篇杂志上。写日记的过程中增强了她的写作能力，原来的缺点也变成了如今的优点。被时间抹去的梦想，此刻在她眼前慢慢清晰，她重拾起了自己的梦，有了新的方向——作家。之后，她开始在短暂的空闲时间里记录下素材，积累诗文。小鸟也越来越高，终于飞出了笼子，飞向蓝天。她终于不再迷茫，眼中闪烁着光芒。
