描写有环境描写和人物描写。环境描写，又有自然环境描写、社会环境描写、场面描写和场所描写.人物描写又分外貌描写、行动描写、语言描写、心理描写。而环境描写和人物描写中又包含了细节描写。(见前面章节)

叙述和描写的区别，主要表现在其表达的语言内容，能否在读者头脑里形成画面，形成生动、具体的感性形象，使读者获得某种体验或共鸣。不能，即是叙述;能，即是描写。
