我在暑假里去了很多地方，其中最使我记忆深刻的是去山海关和长城的起点：老龙头。

我们全家来到了山海关景区。刚一进景区，就看见了一座大城门，城门上有两个大字迎旭进去之后，看见了一个牌楼，名叫“进士坊”。再往前走，就又能看见一个牌楼，写着“维藩首善”四个字。就在这牌楼的后面就是我们期盼已久的“天下第一关”山海关。我仰望着山海关，眼前是雄伟壮观的城楼。宽大的城门，足有七八米高;再往上是高大而结实的城墙，给人一种磅礴的气势;城墙的上面则是一个两层的阁楼，上面是红色的，下面是灰色的，再衬托着蓝色的天空，更显现出山海关雄伟的气势。我看着这些，心中不禁赞叹道：我国古代人民是多么伟大呀!

之后，我们又驱车来到了老龙头：长城的起点。沿着海边的沙滩小路，我们先来到了一个叫“海神庙”的水上建筑，门前是一条石路。我怀着好奇的心情走进海神庙。进去正对着有两只神兽，两边是攀着石雕的栏柱，后面是一座很高的宫殿，名叫“天后宫”，让人觉得这里很有灵气。

出了海神庙，我又怀着激动的心情，爬上了老龙头的城墙。刚一上去，就看见了一个阁楼，阁楼的牌匾上写着“澄海楼”三个字。出了澄海楼，就看见了一尊大炮。它伫立在那里，跑口对准了防御的地方，让我不由得想象出当年那些守卫边疆的战士门，舍弃自己的生命，用他们自己的血肉，保卫祖国的情景。

后来，我望着老龙头的龙头那一座塔楼，虽然他不大，但在我的心中却十分高大。我走到塔楼的里面，望着大海，心情是无比的兴奋，我看到了历史，也看到了未来。

The policemen took down details of the accident. Mr Lee and the lorry

driver told them all they could remember. The policemen thanked them for their

help. Mr and Mrs Lee got into their car and continued their journey home.

The above table clearly mirrors an upward trend in the number of people who prefer to travel abroad over the last decade. In 1995, there are only ten thousand tourists going overseas to take a trip. In 2000, the figure climbs to approximately 40 thousand, and peaks at 120 thousand in 2005.

There are a huge number of reasons behind this phenomenon, of which the most important one is --China‘s booming economy.

Thanks to the deepening of reform and opening-up, citizens of the Middle Kingdom enjoy a sharp improvement in their living standards. Perhaps getting tired of visiting scenic spots at home, an increasing number of them choose foreign countries as their tour destinations.

When it comes to what impacts it would bring, in my eyes, it would give a huge boost to tour industry both at home and abroad. And it would give Chinese deeper insights into foreign cultures. Of course, the dark side of this phenomenon also exists. For instance, the uncivilized behavior of some Chinese tourists may have a negative impact on China‘s image. Anyway, overseas travel is beneficial. What really needs to occur is consumer education.

Lying at the center of Beijing, the Forbidden City, called Gu Gong, in Chinese, was the imperial palace during the Ming and Qing dynasties. Now known as the Palace Museum, it is to the north of Tiananmen Square. Rectangular in shape, it is the worlds largest palace complex and covers 74 hectares. Surrounded by a six meter deep moat and a ten meter high wall are 9,999 buildings. The wall has a gate on each side. Opposite the Tiananmen Gate, to the north is the Gate of Devine Might (Shenwumen), which faces Jingshan Park. The distance between these two gates is 960 meters, while the distance between the gates in the east and west walls is 750 meters. There are unique and delicately structured towers on each of the four corners of the curtain wall. These afford views over both the palace and the city outside. The Forbidden City is divided into two parts. The southern section, or the Outer Court was where the emperor exercised his supreme power over the nation. The northern section, or the Inner Court was where he lived with his royal family. Until 1924 when the last emperor of China was driven from the Inner Court, fourteen emperors of the Ming dynasty and ten emperors of the Qing dynasty had reigned here. Having been the imperial palace for some five centuries, it houses numerous rare treasures and curiosities. Listed by UNESCO as a World Cultural Heritage Site in 1987, the Palace Museum is now one of the most popular tourist attractions world wide.

Construction of the palace complex began in 1407, the 5th year of the Yongle reign of the third emperor of the Ming dynasty. It was completed fourteen years later in 1420. It was said that a million workers including one hundred thousand artisans were driven into the long-term hard labor. Stone needed was quarried from Fangshan, a suburb of Beijing. It was said a well was dug every fifty meters along the road in order to pour water onto the road in winter to slide huge stones on ice into the city. Huge amounts of timber and other materials were freighted from faraway provinces. Ancient Chinese people displayed their very considerable skills in building the Forbidden City. Take the grand red city wall for example. It has an 8.6 meters wide base reducing to 6.66 meters wide at the top. The angular shape of the wall totally frustrates attempts to climb it. The bricks were made from white lime and glutinous rice while the cement is made from glutinous rice and egg whites. These incredible materials make the wall extraordinarily strong.

Since yellow is the symbol of the royal family, it is the dominant color in the Forbidden City. Roofs are built with yellow glazed tiles; decorations in the palace are painted yellow; even the bricks on the ground are made yellow by a special process. However, there is one exception. Wenyuange, the royal library, has a black roof. The reason is that it was believed black represented water then and could extinguish fire.

Nowadays, the Forbidden City, or the Palace Museum is open to tourists from home and abroad. Splendid painted decoration on these royal architectural wonders, the grand and deluxe halls, with their surprisingly magnificent treasures will certainly satisfy "modern civilians".

Beijing has a history of over 3,000 years with a population of nearly 13

million and a lot of places of interest around it. In recent years, the city of

Beijing has been advancing very quickly. You can see more museums, parks an

shopping centers here and there. More and more highways and overhead walkways

have been built up. Whats more, a lot more buses which burn cleaner fuel, such

as CNG or LPG, are put into use, to prevent air from being polluted. Water in

the rivers is clean again. Wherever you go, you can see green trees, grass and

beautiful flowers. All these make life in Beijing more convenient, pleasant and

colorful. Beijing is still advancing to the bright future.

I enjoy reading books very much, because there are lots of interesting

things in them. Two years ago, I didnt like reading very much. I had plenty of

time, but I spent lots of time on playing with computers. When I was very young,

I didnt think reading book was interesting, because I found nothing more

interesting than the computer games. Ive changed now. I enjoy reading novels,

because therere lots of interesting stories. I love to read Harry Potter.

Thats a good novel. I know that it is one of the best-sellers in England. Im

always lose myself in the interesting stories. From joozone.com. I hate the

words like "to be continued" in a novel. That makes me very sad, because I dont

know the end of the story. I also hate the words like "the end", because I want

to read more. Some of my friends think that Im strange. Maybe you can find the

interesting things in a book, so dont waste your time in the computers any

more. If you read very much, you will get lots of knowledge.

When I was a little child, I had many dreams. I wanted to be rich, so that

I can live in a big and beautiful house. I can go everywhere by car. But now, my

dream seems to be better and more realistic. I hope I can have a good job. It

will not take much of my time, although I can’t earn much. Every year, I have

holidays to travel. Traveling is my favorite and it can reduce my pressure. It’s

good for my life. Therefore, I hope traveling can be a part of my future

life.

The winter vacation is coming. I’m going to do what I want to do.

First, I’m going to have a good rest and relax. I will read some good books. Reading books is useful because it can help me get more knowledge. It can open up my eyes to the world. Next, I’m going to spend more time talking with my parents. I will also try my best to help them do some housework. Then, I’m going to take part in social activities (社会活动)so that I can know more people.
