三天后，鲁肃把船借与诸葛亮，并随船去取箭。诸葛亮下令把船连在一起，向北岸出发，江上起大雾。船靠近曹操水寨，便下令船上的军士打鼓。这时曹寨将士以为敌人来袭，可不熟水性的曹军不敢下水作战，只能慌乱无目的地放箭，顿时箭如雨下，诸葛亮让船两面受箭，箭满，诸葛亮令船上军士高声喊：“谢曹丞相的箭，谢曹丞相的箭……”

曹军这才恍然大悟，可诸葛亮顺风顺水一下开出20多里，再追也来不及了。

周瑜见到诸葛亮有才干，和妒忌他。

有一次，周瑜要和曹军水上交战，问诸葛亮用什么兵器。诸葛亮说是弓箭，周瑜便给了诸葛亮不可完成的任务；十天造好，以此来陷害他。而诸葛亮却说三天，便立下了军令状；周瑜也布酒席招待他。回来后，诸葛亮又让鲁肃帮忙准备；他自有妙计。一直到了第三天，鲁肃和诸葛亮在船上饮酒作乐，诸葛亮的妙计是：“向曹军借箭。”

此时外面的稻草人身上是弓箭布满，要说一条船上也有五六千只，后来周瑜派来了500个军士正好来江边取箭；鲁肃又告诉了周瑜诸葛亮的借箭过程，也如期的交上了十万之箭。周瑜说：“诸葛亮的神机妙算，我真比不上他！”
