有一天，周瑜故意为难诸葛亮，以公事为由，让他在十天内造十万支箭。诸葛亮却说只要三天。周瑜不信，叫诸葛亮立下军令状。

诸葛亮走后，周瑜叫鲁肃去探听诸葛亮的.计划，回来向他汇报。

鲁肃见了诸葛亮，诸葛亮信任鲁肃，并了解鲁肃的性格，所以把自己的计划告诉了他，而且叮嘱他不要告诉周瑜。鲁肃答应了。当周瑜问到时，鲁肃只说诸葛亮不用普通的材料，周瑜很疑惑。

鲁肃把诸葛亮要的东西都准备好了。前两天，诸葛亮没什么动静，直到第三天，诸葛亮才叫来鲁肃，让他跟自己去取箭。

这时大雾漫天，船靠近曹营，让军士擂鼓呐喊，曹操听到喊声，便叫手下放箭。过了一会儿，诸葛亮叫人把船尾转过来。

等天快亮时，两边的草把子上插满了箭。一算，大概十万多支!鲁肃告诉周瑜借箭的经过以后，周瑜终于承认自己比不上诸葛亮了。

三天后，诸葛亮利用大雾天气来到江上，叫士兵一边击鼓一边呐喊，且船头朝西，船尾朝东。鲁肃害怕曹操追赶，诸葛亮却不以为然，和鲁肃在船上饮酒作乐。曹操听见呐喊声和鼓声，却不敢贸然出兵，让弓箭手朝他们射箭。诸葛亮调转船头，让船两面受箭。这样获得了曹军的十万余支箭。船开走时，诸葛亮还让士兵大喊，谢谢曹丞相的箭，这才让曹操幡然醒悟，但诸葛亮的船顺着风和水，早已驶远了。

船靠了岸，鲁肃把事情的前因后果告诉周瑜后，周瑜自叹不如。
