When a person decides to own a dog, he should be prepared to care for it properly. For a dog to stay healthy it must be correctly fed and adequately groomed, and its medical needs must be met. They have delivered messages, herded sheep and cattle, and even rescued persons trapped in the snow. Dogs have served as a source of food, too. The ancient Romans are said to have prized certain kinds of dog stew. The Aztecs of ancient Mexico raised tiny dogs, thought to be the forebears of the chihuahua, to feed the large carnivores in the private zoos of the Aztec rulers. In the past dogs have even been worshiped as gods. Recently, they have been used in drug research, medical experimentation, and space science. Soviet scientists launched dogs into space to test the ability of mammals to survive the rigors of space travel before people were sent up.

Dogs are trained as guard dogs in peacetime by the United States Army and other military services. Because of their keen sense of smell, dogs are used by police at times to track down escaped prisoners. Law enforcement agencies also rely on the dogs acute sense of smell to uncover illegal drugs. And specially trained dogs serve as the "eyes" of the blind, guiding the steps of their sightless masters around obstacles and hazards.

When the Arctic Ocean freezes over in the autumn, polar bears set off in search of their favorite meals: fatty ringed seals and bearded seals. By the summer, the sea ice begins to melt and break apart. Deprived of access to the tasty seals, polar bears spend the summer fasting. At least, thats whats supposed to happen. As the planet warms, the warmer ice-free season is getting longer and longer. So whats a hungry bear to do?

Scientists once thought that polar bears might survive by supplementing their pinniped diet by turning to terrestrial foods like snow geese, their eggs and caribou.

"Weve had this debate in the literature about whether terrestrial foods are nutritionally relevant to polar bears during the on-land season when the ice has melted."

University of Alberta biologist Nick Pilfold.

"And weve known for a long time, going back to research in the early 70s, even going to back to early explorer logs, that polar bears will consume terrestrial based foods. But the debate was always whether those foods actually add up, energetically." In other words, do these substitutes provide enough nutrition to make up for the lost seals?

To find out, Pilfold and his colleagues estimated the weight lost each day by polar bears in the wilds of western Hudson Bay during the ice-free season, when they could ostensibly be chowing down on terrestrial foods. Then they compared that to the weight lost by bears that are temporarily held in Manitobas Polar Bear Alert Program.

While captive, the bears do not eat. They drop about one kilogram each day. But the wild bears, who had access to the Arctic snack bar, lost the same amount of weight each day. The results are in the journal Physiological and Biochemical Zoology.

"Which is really saying that the terrestrial foods do not have dense enough energy to offset the mass loss. So this idea that bears can just switch from eating sea ice–based food to land food and thats going to help supplement against longer ice-free seasons, that really doesnt show up in the data."

The problem is that polar bears evolved to rely on the marine diet.

"The food on land is protein and carbohydrate based, and the food the polar bears really focus on is fat. Fat is the name of the game for these bears; theyre highly adapted to absorbing that fat into their system and putting it onto their body as body mass, so they can fast on it later on. And the only thing thats going to provide them with that type of fat are marine mammals. And they can only access those marine mammals when theres sea ice."

Adult males can go eight months without food. But younger, sub-adult bears, which are no longer nursing and must hunt, cant last as long without sea ice. So as the Arctic warms, younger polar bears will disproportionately die out. Leaving the species survival in doubt.

尼克·皮尔福德是加拿大阿尔伯塔大学的生物学家。

“通过上世纪70年代初的研究，还有早期的探险者日志，我们很早以前就知道，北极熊会以陆地食物为食。但是辩论的焦点在于，这些食物是否能增加北极熊的能量。”换句话说，这些替代食物能否为北极熊提供足够的营养，弥补不能进食海豹带来的损失?

为了解开这个疑惑，皮尔福德及同事对西哈德逊湾荒野地区的北极熊在无冰季期间每天失掉的体重进行了估算，从表面上看，北极熊在这段时间食用了陆地食物。随后，他们将这一数据与通过马尼托巴北极熊预警计划暂时捕得的北极熊所失掉的体重进行了对比。

在被关期间，北极熊不吃东西。它们的体重每天大约下降1公斤。虽然野生北极熊能享用北极“小吃”，但是它们的体重每天也同样会下降1公斤。这一研究结果发表在《生理学和生化动物学》期刊上。

“显然结果表明，陆地食物不能为北极熊提供足以抵消大量损失的能量。所以，北极熊可以从食用海冰下面的食物转向食用陆地食物，并帮助它们对抗日益延长的无冰季这个观点，并没有在这项数据中得到证明。”

问题是，北极熊进化成了依靠海洋食物的动物。

“陆地食物以蛋白质和碳水化合物为基础，而北极熊需要的食物以脂肪为主。脂肪是这些熊真正需要的东西;它们高度适应的情况是，将脂肪吸收进它们的系统中，然后把这些脂肪放在身上以增加体重，这样它们之后就可以依靠这些脂肪来度过禁食期。唯一能提供给北极熊这种脂肪的就是海洋哺乳动物。但是它们只能在有海冰时食用到这些海洋哺乳动物。”

成年北极熊可以8个月不进食。但是小一些的未成年北极熊已经不再被哺育，它们必须要去猎食，可是它们不能在漫长的无冰季期间一直不进食。所以，随着北极地区变暖，较小的北极熊将会大批死亡。这使这些物种的生存成为问题。

星期五下午放学后，我一回到家，打开门，就看见妈妈正在宰鸭。她脚下踏着鸭掌，手左捏着鸭头，右手正在挥刀杀生。我刚想阻止，怎料妈妈手起刀落，“啪”的一声，整个鸭儿摊在了地上，血从它的脖子上涌出来。

我走上前去，厉声质问妈妈：“你为什么要宰我的鸭儿。你不觉得这样很残忍吗?它是我的好伙伴，你却这样伤了它。书上不是说动物是人类的好朋友，我们要保护动物吗?”爸爸说：“区区一个鸭子，有什么好哭。”我再也不想跟他们辩了，于是直冲入房，捂住被子，号啕大哭起来。

吃完饭，我打开电视，在转到宠物频道时，我看到有一个人养了一只鸽子。有一天，那鸽子在树上被卡住了，飞不下来。于是，主人就不顾危险爬到树上去，将鸽子救了下来。但是却把他困在了树上，直到有人打了求助电话，他才平安地下来。

是呀，为了一只动物，那个养鸽人却能不顾生命危险去救助，多么令人感动呀!我们人类与动物就应这样和睦相处，好好保护我们地球的生态环境。不过，我听老师说，对圈养来改善生活的家禽、家畜，我们是可以区别地分开来对待的。

爱护弱小，是我们中华民族的传统美德。我想，用在这里，也是相通的。所以，我们一定要珍惜动物的生命，尽量不要伤害他们。

地球是我们的母亲，是我们赖以生存的家园。随着生活水平的提高，人类在享受的同时，却在不知不觉地破坏她，我们的生存环境不断恶化。

平时没事时，我们就吃一块口香糖，嚼完后随口吐在地上，口香糖牢牢地粘在地上，清洁工人得用铲子才能把它弄掉，而且口香糖也污染土地。我们经常在购物时，会用到大大小小的塑料袋，却不知塑料袋被火烧后会制造有毒气体，填埋后还不容易降解，还会导致土地被破坏，中国人口这么多，可想而知会有多少塑料袋在污染我们的环境。

一个人的环保行动就像是一盏灯，当大家都点燃自己的那盏灯，整个世界就会一片光明!让我们行动起来吧!不吃口香糖;不用塑料袋;不用一次性筷子…保护环境，人人有责!让我们的地球更加美丽!

对人有益的动物有很多，例如有蜻蜓、青蛙等等。

我们先说蜻蜓吧，它是益虫，它对人的益处可多了。它生活在小池子旁边，捕捉害虫。有些人，捉蜻蜓，捕蜻蜓，捉住后到处卖。我们应给立一个保护蜻蜓法，如果他们再敢捉蜻蜓，捕蜻蜓，就是知法犯法，交给警察叔叔处理。

Remember last years summer vacation, my father and I went for a walk EHu edge, a way, Im kind of shouted thirsty, so my father on the side of the road store bought me a Popsicle. I ate and go, soon finished eating, carelessly threw the ice sticks into EHu. Dad saw, reminded me immediately; "Coco, cant litter oh! If everyone like you to throw garbage in the lake, the beautiful EHu lake becomes waste." Im ashamed of say: "know, next time I must not litter." Dad smiled and stroked my head and said: "the earth is our home, we should protect it, cherish it, let the sky bluer, the water cleaner, the grass is greener." 今天，我们读了很多关于保护环境的小短文。我想起曾经在我身边发生的事情。

记得是去年的暑假，我和爸爸一起去鹅湖边散步，走了一段路，我就一个劲的喊口渴，于是，爸爸就在路边的小店给我买了根冰棍。我边吃边走，一会儿就吃完了，随手把冰棍棒往鹅湖里一扔。爸爸看见了，马上提醒我说;“可可，不能乱扔垃圾噢!如果每个人都像你一样往湖里扔垃圾，这美丽的鹅湖不就变成了垃圾湖了。”我羞愧的说：“知道了，我下次一定不乱扔垃圾。”爸爸微笑着抚摸我的头说：“地球也是我们的家，我们应该保护它，爱护它，让天更蓝，水更清，草更绿。”我调皮的说：“噢，那就是大家一直说的，城市是我家，环境清洁靠大家。我明白了。”让从那以后，我再也不乱扔垃圾了。

我想爱护环境与每个人息息相关，所以要从每个人做起!

My favourite animal is the panda,is our"national treasure",bacause pandas nive,lovable and lively,it was very likr it.panda is an ancient animal,is a zoologist called "living fossile " long ago there were many pandas in china,panda bamoo living area has large flowers,dead,threatening the survival of giant pandas.The whole world is extremely concerned about the rare giant panda rescue and transfer work.due to the destruction of the natural balance,climate warming,fewer and fewer panda.Panda is one of endangered animals,now only found in China,Sichuan,Shaanxi,Gansu,people began to conserve this endangered species.Today,the number of pandas has increased,but there is still a long way to go.Care for animals,is to protect human,we should be animals as mans best friend,to care,to protect them.Protection of animals is a duty of each person,let us work together to protect the giant pandas,giving them a good home.

here are many kinds of animals in the world,but not only the humans.we live in the same world,and we should be friends.as everybody knows,the humans are the rulers of the world today,so we should protect our friends--the animals!

But how to protect them?as first,i think we must stop killing the rare birds and animals,especially the young ones.the second,we have to protect the environment,to make the sky blue,to make the grass green,to give the animals a comfortable space to live
