刺猬是一种体肥矮，爪锐利，眼睛小，毛短，浑身长有短而密的刺。它们在夜间活动，以昆虫和蠕虫为主要食物。一个晚上就能吃200克的虫子。在苏南地区被称为“偷瓜贼”。

在野生环境中自由生存的刺猬会以花园，公园等地消灭虫蛹、老鼠以及蛇，是自然界里不用付薪水的园丁。

当然，刺猬在很饿的情况下，也会偷吃几个水果来填饱肚子。虽然身单力薄，行动迟钝，但却有一套可以保护自己的好本领。当遇到敌人袭击时，它就会缩成一团，包住自己的头和尾，让敌人无处下手，从而脱身。

刺猬是变温动物，因为它们不能调节自己的体温，使其保持在同一水平。所以刺猬需要冬眠。它的形态非常可爱，性格也特别温和，所以也很讨人喜欢。

刺猬有着很长的鼻子，触觉与嗅觉很敏锐。当它嗅到地下的食物时，就会用抓挖出洞口，然后用又长又粘的舌头一个一个的舔出来。因其捕食大量的害虫，对人类而言，刺猬是有益的动物。

它经常在夜间活动，主要的天敌有猫头鹰，狐狸等。当刺猬发现了有气味的食物时，会涂抹在刺上，使自己防止被天敌发现，也使自己的刺上沾染一些有毒物，以抵抗攻击它的敌人。

刺猬每年四月开始婚配生育。每年产1—2胎，每胎3—4只。由母乳喂养3—4周，随后，母亲教它们如何找食物。但是，90%的小刺猬都活不过一年。

刺猬是国家二级保护动物，所以我们要珍惜它们，不能捕捉虐待它们。
