Another legend associates the Lantern Festival with Taoism. Tianguan is the

Taoist god responsible for good fortune. His birthday falls on the 15th day of

the first lunar month. It is said that Tianguan likes all types of

entertainment, so followers prepare various kinds of activities during which

they pray for good fortune.

Yet another common legend dealing with the origins of the Lantern Festival

speaks of a beautiful bird that flew down to earth from heaven, which was hunted

and killed by some villagers. This angered the Jade Emperor in Heaven because

the bird was his favorite one. Therefore, he planned a storm of fire to destroy

the village on the 15th lunar day. The Jade Emperors daughter heard of this

plan, and warned the villagers of her father’s plan to destroy their village.

The village was in turmoil because nobody knew how should they escape their

imminent destruction.

However, a wise man from another village suggested that every family should

hang red lanterns around their houses, set up bonfires on the streets, and

explode firecrackers on the 14th, 15th, and 16th lunar days. This would give the

village the appearance of being on fire to the Jade Emperor. On the 15th lunar

day, troops sent down from heaven whose mission was to destroy the village saw

that the village was already ablaze, and returned to heaven to report to the

Jade Emperor. Satisfied, the Jade Emperor decided not to burn down the village.

From that day on, people celebrate the anniversary on the 15th lunar day every

year by carrying red lanterns on the streets and exploding firecrackers and

fireworks.

There are many stories on how this festival was created. One other story is

about a maid. In the Han Dynasty, Mr. Eastern was a favorite advisor of the

emperor. One winter day, he went to the garden and heard a little girl crying

and getting ready to jump into a well to commit suicide. Mr. Eastern stopped her

and asked why. She said she was a maid in the emperors palace and her name was

Yuan-Xiao.

She never had the chance to meet her family after she started worked at the

palace. She missed them so much every 12th lunar month. If she couldnt have the

chance to show her filial piety in this life, she would rather die. Mr. Eastern

promised her to find a way so she could reunion with her family. Mr. Eastern

left the palace and set up a fortune-telling stall on the street and disguised

But every one got the same prediction - a severe fire accident on the 15th

lunar day. The rumor spread quickly. Everyone was worried about the future and

asked Mr. Eastern for help. Mr. Eastern said, "On the 13th lunar day, the God of

Fire will send a fairy lady in red to burn down the city. If you see a lady in

red wearing green pants riding a black horse on that day, you should ask for her

mercy." On that day, Yuan-Xiao pretended to be the red fairy lady. When people

asked for her help, she said, "Im the messenger of the God of Fire and came to

check on the city and Im going to set up fire on 15th. This is an order from

Yuan-Xiao cooked the best Tan-Yuan, people called the day Yuan-Xiao

Festival.

Matchmakers acted busily in hopes of pairing couples. The brightest lanterns

were symbolic of good luck and hope. As time has passed, the festival no longer

has such implications.

Those who do not carry lanterns often enjoy watching informal lantern

parades. In addition to eating tangyuan (simplified Chinese: 汤圆; traditional

Chinese: 湯圓; pinyin: tāngyuán), another popular activity at this festival is

guessing lantern riddles (which became part of the festival during the Tang

Dynasty), which often contain messages of good fortune, family reunion, abundant

分配完工作，我们便投入到制作水果沙拉的热情中。陶泓之把苹果切成几块，然后又分别将石榴、香蕉、橘子、猕猴桃的皮剥开。我们用香蕉在盘子里摆了一圈，周健铭又用苹果在香蕉的里面摆了一圈，我又拿来几丫橘子在苹果的里面又摆了一圈。陶泓之把石榴递给周健铭，他想了想，便让我和他一起把石榴放到香蕉的外面摆了一个圈，摆好了，我们发现中间还少了一点什么色彩，陶泓之提了一个建议：“我们把猕猴桃切成一块一块的，放中间怎么样?”我们听了，也觉得这是一个好主意。可是，放好了，我们依然觉得还缺点什么。正当我们无计可施的时候，李老师拿了几块软糖给我们，真可谓是雪中送炭呀!我们将其中的两块软糖插上牙签扎在猕猴桃上，又把剩下的软糖平均地在橘子里摆了一圈。水果沙拉做好了。色彩艳丽,造型美观,两颗鲜红的桃心在其它颜色水果的衬托下尤其耀眼,我们将自己的水果沙拉命名为“心心彩艳”。 老师从每个组选出一位评委上台评价，评委们一边品尝,脸上一边展现出满意的神情。轮到我们的作品了,我们一动不动地盯着评委们的脸，心里也“扑通扑通”地跳个不停,终于,评委们脸上露出了惊喜的神色。我们组以三票成为了第一名，另一组2票成为了第二名，但是，有三个组的作品都是一票，于是老师又选了3位评委上去品尝，经过评委们的一致认同，第三名和第四名也诞生了。评选过后，大家便狼吞虎咽地吃着作品，我也不例外，吃着自己的劳动成果比吃了蜜还甜。

我最喜欢的植物是多肉，它是我珍爱的植物，也是我养的时间最长的植物。

多肉是由一个笔直的枝干和许多充满水分的叶子组成的，绿油油的，颜色很耀眼，生命力也不一般。每次到死亡的边缘线时，都能再次复活。有一次，我两个多月没浇水，它那充满水分，绿油油的叶子都掉光了，我放弃了它，正当我刚要走开的时候，一个耀眼的绿色光芒闪烁了起来，仔细一看，原来是一片“幸存”下来的孤零零的叶子，这时，心里涌出了一个念头：把这个叶子种起来，说不定还能再生长出来新的枝叶，拥有新的生命。

十天半月后，奇迹出现了，它竟然长出了新的，我用手摸了一下，又感觉到了一股新的生命在指尖跳动，那样强烈，那样鲜明。我又重新拾起了让它重生的希望，这让我明白了生命意味着什么——勇气。

多肉的叶子还有一个大作用，把叶子捏碎后的汁水抹到被蚊子咬的地方，会清爽很多，比芦荟、薄荷管用多了，小时候被蚊子咬了个包，擦上这种药水，犹如春暖花开，不用每天痛苦地挠着，用着各种难闻的药，真是药效奇特啊!

我非常喜欢多肉，它不仅可以当药用，也可以当作一个小型景物观赏，用处丰富啊。

晚上，妈妈买来一些水果，这些水果是：金黄色的香蕉、红彤彤的苹果、紫色的葡萄、红红的石榴。这些金黄色的香蕉就像一个个小船，紫色的葡萄就像一颗颗明亮的小眼晴，还有晶莹剔透的红石榴，一粒粒小小的石榴就像红宝石闪亮耀眼。

我问妈妈道：“我们要做什么吃，是水果沙拉吗?”妈妈笑着点了头。于是，我就赶紧过来帮忙。妈妈给我了一个金黄色的小桔子让我帮着拨开，只见这个小桔子圆圆的，看起来就像一盏小黄灯笼。桔子上面有两片绿绿的叶子，像弯弯的小船。

妈妈把苹果和香蕉切成小块放在盘子里，我又拿来一包酸奶均匀地浇在所有水果上，浇完了，我都已经馋得直流口水了，但我还是说：“为了体现出我尊老爱幼的行为，还是让妈妈先吃吧。”妈妈尝完让我来尝，我迫不及待地吃了起来。

“啊，酸酸甜甜的，真好吃呀!”我称赞道。

这次我不仅尝到了美味的水果沙拉，还学到了一个小知识：多吃水果还能治病呢。真是一举两得呀!

legacy, while others sought to combine the strengths of Chinese and Western

cultures.

China is a unified nation consisting of many different ethnic groups.

Fifty-six different ethnic groups make up the great Chinese national family.

Because the Han people accounts for more than ninety percent of Chinas

population, the remaining fifty-five groups are generally referred to as "ethnic

minorities." Next to the majority Han, the Mongolian, Hui, Tibetan, and Uygur

peoples comprise the largest ethnic groups. Although Chinas ethnic minorities

do not account for a large portion of the population, they are distributed over

a vast area, residing in every corner of China.

Particularly since the implementation of Chinas opening and reform policy,

the central government has increased investment in minority areas and

accelerated their opening to the outside world. This has resulted in an upsurge

of economic development in these areas. Each of Chinas ethnic minority groups

possesses a distinctive culture. The Chinese government respects minority

customs, and works to preserve, study, and collate the cultural artifacts of

Chinas ethnic minority groups. The government vigorously supports the

development of minority culture and the training of minority cultural workers,

and fosters the development of traditional minority medicine.

The relation among Chinas ethnic groups can be described as "overall

integration, local concentration, mutual interaction." Concentrations of ethnic

minorities reside within predominantly Han areas, and the Han people also reside

in minority areas, indicating that there has been extensive exchanges among

Chinas ethnic groups since ancient times. With the development of the market

economy, interaction among ethnic groups has become even more active in the

areas of government, economics, culture, daily life, and marriage. Linked by

interdependence, mutual assistance, and joint development, their common goals

and interests creating a deep sense of solidarity, Chinas ethnic groups

resemble a great national family, together building Chinese civilization.
