沈阳故宫又称后金故宫，始建于公元1625年，是清朝入关前清太祖努尔哈赤、清太宗皇太极建造的皇宫，又称盛京皇宫。清世祖福临在此即位称帝。沈阳故宫是国家重点文物保护单位，是中国现存完整的两座宫殿建筑群之一，现已辟为沈阳故宫博物院。北京、沈阳两座故宫构成了中国仅存的两大完整的明清皇宫建筑群。2004年7月1日。在中国苏州召开的第28届世界遗产委员会会议批准中国的沈阳故宫作为明清皇宫文化遗产扩展项目列入《世界遗产名录》 ，它以独特的历史、地理条件和浓郁的满族特色而迥异于北京故宫。沈阳故宫那金龙蟠柱的大政殿、崇政殿,排如雁行的十王亭、万字炕口袋房的清宁宫,古朴典雅的文朔阁,以及凤凰楼等高台建筑，在中国宫殿建筑史上绝无仅有;那极富满族情调的“宫高殿低”的建筑风格，更是“别无分号”。这座占地6万平方米的古建筑群始建于1625年(后金天命十年)，建成于1636年(清崇德元年)。全部建筑90余所，300余间。
