Listed by UNESCO as a World Cultural Heritage Site in 1987, the Palace Museum is now one of the most popular tourist attractions world wide.

Construction of the palace complex began in 1407, the 5th year of the Yongle reign of the third emperor of the Ming dynasty. It was completed fourteen years later in 1420. It was said that a million workers including one hundred thousand artisans were driven into the long-term hard labor. Stone needed was quarried from Fangshan, a suburb of Beijing. It was said a well was dug every fifty meters along the road in order to pour water onto the road in winter to slide huge stones on ice into the city. The bricks were made from white lime and glutinous rice while the cement is made from glutinous rice and egg whites. These incredible materials make the wall extraordinarily strong.

Since yellow is the symbol of the royal family, it is the dominant color in the Forbidden City. Roofs are built with yellow glazed tiles; decorations in the palace are painted yellow; even the bricks on the ground are made yellow by a special process. However, there is one exception. Wenyuange, the royal library, has a black roof. The reason is that it was believed black represented water then and could extinguish fire.

今天我参观了金碧辉煌的故宫博物院，我们从天安门开始行程，先后经过端门、午门，进入故宫。顺着北京的中轴线一直往里，我们走过金水河桥，穿过太和门。

一座雄伟古香古色的建筑出现在我们的眼前，这就是我们熟悉的金銮殿了，是古代皇上朝见臣子大臣、举行盛大仪式的地方，金色的琉璃瓦房顶向我们展示着几百年来皇家的恢弘气派，朱红的大门那样的庄严肃穆，又透露着几分威严。精巧的雕梁画栋以蓝白为主，加上红黄颜色，朴素又不失高贵，将整个大殿衬托的高雅富贵。站在这里，看着那威武的铜铸雄狮，抚摸着带有龙凤祥云图案的汉白玉栏杆，心绪也不禁随着那斑驳的石板路飘向了遥远的古老的年代，文臣武将们穿戴着顶戴花翎、锦绣华丽的官服整齐的站立，一代天子就坐在这大殿之上接受百官们的朝拜。多么壮观的场面!想到这我心里也激动起来。

与金銮殿的壮丽相比，御花园就多一些秀丽。不过这里的一草一木都历经百年的沧桑历史，不管是那苍劲高大的古树，还是那造型别致的假山都记录着历史的兴衰。

下午我们去了皇家祈福祭天的地方——天坛，天坛的顶部最有特点，由三个巨大的蓝色圆锥形搭成，很像三顶明清时期大臣们的帽子摞起来。内部有四根雕刻着金色花纹的大柱子支撑，代表四季五谷丰登。四周有2根朱红的柱子围绕，代表一年12个月。仰望天坛圆锥塔顶在蓝天的映衬下，华贵庄严忽然感到上天的有无比的神力，让人敬畏，而人类是多么渺小啊!

结束了北京之旅的第一天，我被这座具有悠久历史的城市征服了，我深深地感到中国历史文化的博大与精神。祖国的伟大不仅在于现代科技的发达，更在于她的古老厚重与庄严!人们习惯于把祖国比作母亲，但我却觉得他更像是一位历经苍桑，却愈发睿智从容的老者，正迈着他稳健的步伐行走于世界的东方。
