The novel is rich in poetry, symbolism and metaphor. It does not fit easily into a definite pattern, being neither a novel of "manners" in the tradition of Austen, or a straightforward Gothic Romance in the style of Mrs Radcliffe. As well as this we learn only at the end of the novel that the events are being related to us ten years after the reconciliation with Rochester - thus the narrative is RETROSPECTIVE (looking back). CB is clever in blending the narrative so that at times Jane seems to be speaking as an adult with adult hindsight , while at others she she is "in the middle" of them, as a child or young woman. The indecision which is a central issue in the book, is heightened by this device. We never know, as readers, whether to be entirely trustful of Janes actions and thoughts, because we are never sure wheher she is speaking impulsively or maturely.

This intensifies the readers dilemma as to what is "right" and "wrong" in the dramatic relationships which are part of JEs life. Can we believe what the heroine says, or is she deceiving herself? The novel is primarily a love story and a "romance" where wishes come true but only after trials and suffering. The supernatural has its place, as do dreams, portents and prophesies. The heroine begins poor and lonely and ends up rich and loved; the orphan finds a good family to replace the wicked one; all the basic ingredients of classic romantic fairytale are present.

The romantic element is present in two forms in Jane Eyre; the "family" aspect is dealt with in the Gateshead, Lowood and Moor House episodes, which involve the exchanging of the wicked Reed family for the benevolent Rivers one; and the Love romance is dealt with in the Thornfield and Ferndean episodes. Both aspects are, of course linked and interwoven throughout the novel.

There is also a strong element of realism in the novel, which, married to the romantic aspect, enhances the novels strength.The sense of place is very strong; we are able to experience both exterior and interior settings with startling clarity throughout the story, in a series of vivid deive passages. The central characters are also realistic and their confrontations and sufferings change them in a believable way.

Even the unlikely is made plausible, with a unique blend of high drama and perceptive low comedy (the attack on Mason, for instance)

The more fantastic romantic aspects; the coincidences; the secrets; the supernatural occurrences, are balanced by the realism, and this is of course a major strength.

The Gothic influence cannot be ignored, although CB has refined the technique considerably from the "authentic" Gothic of the 1790s. In the original genre, the heroine would typically be abducted and threatened with seduction, or worse!. There would be a lover - a respectable, well-bred young man - who would endeavor to rescue the heroine and would succeed after many trial. the seducer would be a brigand "Know that I adore Corsairs!" and he would lock the girl up in a remote castle.

There was little freedom for middle class women during the period of the Gothic novel, and this was still the case in the time of CB. Ironically the women who provided their services were social outcasts as a result.

In Jane Eyre we see elements of the Gothic romance, in that Thornfield Hall and Rochester are described very much in the brigand/castle style BUT Jane Eyre is not abducted by R. On the contrary she chooses to go there of her own free will. AND she is clear in her determination to have Rochester as a husband. Neither is there a gentleman rescuer; St John Rivers may look like a Greek God, but he is neither kind nor benevolent; driving Jane back to Ferndean, not rescuing her from it.

The trials which the hero is supposed to undergo in a Gothic romance are in fact undergone by the heroine in Jane Eyre. The bandit Rochester is only skin-deep. 司汤达的《红与黑》，写的是法国青年于连的故事。于连是一个有才华，有野心，有自尊，也有良心的人。许多评价把于连说成是一味向上爬的野心家。但我个人而言，我觉得他们都忽略了一点，就是于连良心的一面。或者说忽略了站在故事背后的作者进行的精神思考。

于连确实是野心家。于连的野心膨胀过程是故事最表面也是最直接的线索。在德。雷纳尔放假，于连想：“我一定要在这个女人身上得手，”“那样如果有一天我发迹了，有人指责我赶过家庭教师这样下等的职业，我就可以告诉他，是爱情把我抛到这个职位上的。”但是于连也像一个哲学家，他思考人生，思考巴黎，在他的脑中挥之不去的是当像拿破仑般的英雄。

在人物塑造的手段上，司汤达使用了超出同时代作家所能及的心理深度的挖掘。以深刻细腻的笔调充分展示了主人公心灵空间，广泛运用了独白和自由联想等多种艺术手法挖掘出了于连深层意识的活动，并开创了后世“意识流小说”“心理小说”的先河。是一首“灵魂的哲学与诗”。

对于书名人们也引起了一番争论，通常，人们认为书名中的“红”是象征拿破仑时代的军服;“黑”是王政复古年代的僧侣黑衣。也有人认为，红是德·瑞那夫人的鲜血，黑是玛特尔的丧服;红与黑是象征赌盘上的黑点红点，而轮盘则象征人生的游戏等。我认为红色还可以象征于连的追求人生意义，而黑色就代表社会中形形色色为了自己的利益而拼命奔波，却不理解自己存在真正意义的生存状态吧!

In winter vacation, I watched a movie called Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. It is very interesting. Though I watched this movie before, I still felt moved this time. The movie is very famous, and won seven Oscar Awards. The plot is like following:

Long long ago, Snow White stayed happily with her parents. But the queen was jealous of Snow White and she sent the hunter to kill Snow White, but the hunter let Snow White escape. I like this story. It tells us a truth: People like beauty and good. The wicked never kill the good! We are happy the prince and the princess were married and lived happily. We hope they can live forever!

《老人与海》的故事很简单，写的是老渔夫圣地亚哥在连续84天没捕到鱼的情况下，终于在第85天钓上了一条大马林鱼，但这条鱼实在太大了，把他的小船在海上拖了三天才筋疲力尽，他杀死了马林鱼绑在小船的一边，可想而知，这需要多大勇气和多强的意志啊！而在归程中又碰到了鲨鱼的袭击，老人与鲨鱼进行了殊死搏斗，但最后回港时只剩下鱼头鱼尾和一条脊骨。

他这种坚持不懈，自信的精神难道不值得我们学习吗？俗语道：不以成败论英雄。虽然老渔夫没有把完整的马林鱼拖回海岸，但他那坚强的意志，勇敢的精神丝毫不比真正的英雄逊色。老渔夫在精神世界中已经成为了历尽磨难而变得顶天立地，战无不胜的巨人了。这不就是所谓的英雄吗？

Despite I’ve not in my childhood yet, I still prefer reading fairy-tale stories. The tales, which accompany with me in my old days, often make me think of some precious experience and sensation which only belong to children. This summer I’ve review this kind of tale, which was published in 1940. It’s the world-famous fairy-tale by the French author, Antoine de St-Exupery, The Little Prince.

As many other fairy-tales, the outline of The Little Prince is not very complex. “I”, the narrator of the story, is a pilot whose plane has something wrong and lands in the Sahara. In this occasion, the pilot makes the acquaintance of the little prince, a little boy from another planet, the Asteroid B612. The little prince has escaped from his tiny planet, because he has some quarrel with a rose, which grows on his planet. In that case he left his own planet and took an exploration at some neighbor asteroids.

On his all-alone journey, the little prince meets different kinds of people, which includes a king, a conceited man, a tippler, a businessman, a lamplighter and a geographer. From these people he gets a conclusion that the grown-ups are very odd. Following the instruction of the geographer, he descends in the Sahara, on the earth.

Traveling on the earth, the little prince, who sees a garden of five-thousand roses, is overcome with astonishment and sadness, as he considers his rose is unique in the universe before. At that time a fox appears. The fox, who tell the little prince about the meaning of the word “tame”, becomes his new friend. At the time to say farewell, the fox makes him know that his rose is unique because she is his rose and tamed by him. From that the little prince begins to treasure friendship and be responsible to his rose.

At the anniversary day of his descent of the earth, rejecting the pilot’s advice, he goes back to his own planet by bite of a snake. “It’s too far. I can not carry this body with me. The character of the little prince actually represents the children, and their native thoughts and deeds. On the contrary, the inhabitants on the other planets, such as the king, the businessman and the conceited man, they also reflect the defects in the grown-up’s world. The real theme of this fairy-tale with a little sadness, I guess, is the consequence of pure love and friendship in our lives, but not others “matters of consequence” of the grown-ups.

We live in a complex society , every day we must be faced with all kinds of person ,which made our heart more and more cold and detached. For me, society is a monster which could kill the pureness inside of my mind. I’m so grateful for reading this story. And from then on, I have a little prince live in my heart, and when I felt tired to face the society, he appeared and took me back to the clean and honest world that I’ve ever stayed in childhood. Then, I found out everything seemed so simple and life was so beautiful.

His grandmother was also a kind woman. She brought up Alexis and gave courage and kindness to Alexis. But unfortunately, his husband always hit her and she died because of illness at last.

His grandfather was a stingy and fierce man. He always maltreats his wife and Alexis. He just loved his money.

The protagonist of this novel was a boy named Alexis. His father died when he was only 3 years old. He followed his mother and came to her motherhome. His grandfather is a violent man. His two uncles are also selfish. His grandfather often hit his wife and his grandson. Little Alexis was maltreated in the family and grew up gradually. However, his grandmother is a kind woman. She is the warm sun of Alexis, she tried her best to protect Alexis. His two uncles wants to get his fathermoney and always fight with their father. The old couple were very disappointed with their son. Finally, the old man decided to separate with them. He sold the old house and bought another home in the city. At that time , his mother came home and married with another man and had a little boy. His stepfather often maltreats his wife and disappeared some days later. He grandfather wanted to earn more money and sold the house. He lent the money to others in order to get more interest and rented a small room to live. He got more and more stingy and did not give any money to his wife. Alexis and his grandmother have to make money by themselves. After some days, his mother got ill and his grandmother was also unhealthy. Unfortunately, his mother died at last. He lost his dear mother. Personal understanding:

After reading this novel, I can not calm down for a long time. He was so young and lives in such a cold family. He almost never gets the love form his parents. In fact ,the writer wanted to express himself through Alexis. Alexis was like himself. Gorky expressed his childhood through Alexis. This book makes me realize these ugly people at that time. If we with compare our childhood with Gorkys, we would think his childhood is too pathetic.

I want to express my feeling to Alexis. He was young and he did not receive good education. He lived with the fights and quarrels of his families. He was unlucky but he still knew how to be a good person. We are so lucky to live in a warm family. But most of us are not satisfied with it and we want more. We do not know how to cherish the things we have. We often ask for everything from our parents and depend them too much. If someone bully us outside, our parents will encourage us, but for Alexis, nobody will help him and his grandfather even maltreats him. What a poor boy he is. Now, we should realize that we should depend on ourselves and cherish our families. Facing the difficulties by ourselves and try to be confident to life. There must be something that make us despairing, however we should learn form the author and look for the happiness from the pain and look for the hope from the despair. Try to be a kind and optimistic person, never lose confidence. Our future will be bright.

The next aspect in the novel is the old man, the grandfather of Alexis. What a selfish man he is. Alexis was his grandson, he did not care about him but maltreat him. His wife born three children for him but he did not love her at all. He just love his money. His character represented many people at that time. And the author wanted to satirize these people by this character. He was an important character in this novel and an important person for Alexis. But he did not be responsible for Alexis. Alexis was so unlucky to have such a bad grandfather. And his grandmother was so unlucky to have such a violent husband.

The most kind and pitiful person was Alexisgrandmother. She was the most attractive woman in the literal history of Russia. She did not live a happy day in her whole life. She was so industrious and simple, maybe she just want a simple life. She just want her children could be happy and her husband could love her even did not maltreat her. But her simple dream did not come true. It was unfair for such a kind woman. She lived an unhappy life everyday, but she still love her grandson. She represented these industrious woman at that time. She gave her love to Alexis and hold the broken family. She was so tried everyday with the housework and the maltreatment. I sympathize her very much. She was moved by those money earned by Alexis and Alexis was the hope to her. They encouraged each other to live a bright life.

After reading this book, I think the most important thing is to be strong. Gorky was strong enough to grow up in such a bad environment and became an excellent writer. The society is developing fast but the people are becoming fragile. We must experience some difficulties in our life. After reading the last page , Alexiss childhood was over , there is a different life waiting for him.

花了三天多的时间终于读完了《简爱》，我知道这是一个十分艰巨的过程。这连住的几日，我几乎除了吃饭和睡觉，一切时间都耗费在这本来自遥远国度的小说里。然而我还得在抱怨的同时，不得不承认它的杰出与迷人。很少见到这样迷人的异国风情。这充满着英国十九世纪趣味的故事里，让我感慨了很多。其实我应该早些接触这本书，早就有很多的人介绍它了。可惜，我拥有着一点排外的情愫，一直拖到现在去欣赏它，实在有些相见恨晚。

作为一个外国人，我对英国人的思维和宗教信仰有点难以适应。不过呢，人世间的真情多数是相通的。每当我读到小简爱因为无亲无故而遭受虐

待和歧视时，心中顿起的怜悯之情真让人难忘;每当简爱一次次化险为夷让我多么兴奋;当她勇敢地拒绝了圣约翰的求婚而坚持自己心中的真爱时，多么令鼓舞和震撼;特别在文章最后，她抛弃一切去照顾那位可怜的爱德华时，我的心中欣慰与感动迸发而出。

关于这本小说，我想它的成功之处就是它在很多艺术方面的杰出融合。我敢确信这本书的作者是一位多才多艺的作家。首先，她在描绘风景时，是以一个画家的审美角度去鉴赏，以一个画家情趣去把握光和影的和谐。读中国的小说很少见到这样细腻的风景描写的词汇。应该要感谢这本书的译者周令本的深厚的国文功底，使译本文采熠熠，令原著生辉。其次，夏落蒂。波郎特在语言学上的造诣也很深厚，作为一名英国人，作者可以说至少精通三种以上的外国语言。在读这本书的时候，我感觉自己可以通过它感受到整个欧洲的文化氛围。比方说英国人的自豪感和绅士风味，德国的大国气氛以及法国女性的天生浪漫情趣。甚至还读出了英国人那种殖民主义的歧视东方人的心理，比如他们称印度是个野蛮的民族。再次，夏落蒂。波郎特对感情戏的处理上，可以称得上很高明。她的主人公很少是一见钟情，这比较现实，但是她赋予的爱情总是在默无声息深入到读者的心田里。如此巧妙的感情戏，让我很意外，很惊喜。

《简爱》的作者如果和中国的曹雪芹相比，毫无疑问，后者的文化底蕴要更博深一些。就像中国和英国人拼比历史，中国人可以无愧地说：我比你老的多。曹雪芹一生所学要比夏落蒂。波郎特要广博的多，毕竟中国的文化底蕴要丰盛的多。中肯的说，简爱的确比不上中国的《红楼梦》。不管是人物丰富还是物致的描绘上，《红楼梦》都是更为杰出的。但是，《简爱》中也有值得中国人去学习和欣赏的地方。比方说，《简爱》对人物的心理描写方面，可以说淋漓尽致。这点在很多中国人的文学作品中做的都不够。

读这本书我仿佛读了一遍《圣经》，西方人对宗教笃深的感情与真诚的信仰，真很令人敬佩。现在的中国是一个缺乏信仰的时代。在读《简爱》时候，让我感受到在拥有宗教哺育下才可以得到的人情的纯美，在现在的中国这真的很难得。其实，很多圣经里的教诲与中国的孔儒的经典思想是相通互补，而现在国人却往往忽视了祖先的睿智。比如圣经里劝人从善，劝人宽忍，劝人感恩，与孔老夫子劝国人礼义仁，两者是相同的。在读《简爱》的时候，我时常被圣经里的美好的思想启迪着，让我联想到中国的现状，心中似乎收获许多。让我坚信，对于中国的儒家文化真的需要重新审视。
