虎妞是带祥子上死亡之路的重要人物，她用谎言欺骗了祥子，而和祥子结了婚。虎妞用自己的钱买了二强子的车，可买车意味着卖车。不久虎妞就因为难产死去了，而祥子不得不卖车来料理虎妞的丧事。当他的愿望破灭时，他还有一丝希望，就是与小福子结婚，可事情处处不如他所愿，小福子忍不住妓女的生活而自杀了。他的希望也被磨灭了，他对生活已经丧失了信心，他开始染上他以前从来都不敢想的恶习。

他上曹宅的要强也没了，“他根本不想上曹宅去了。一上曹宅，他就得要强，要强有什么用呢?就这么大咧咧的瞎混吧：没饭吃呢，就把车拉出去，够吃一天的呢，就歇一天，明天再说明天的。这不单是个办法，而且是唯一的办法。攒钱，买车，都给别人预备来抢，何苦呢?何不得乐且乐呢?”这段话已经表明了祥子对生活的绝望，连要强也没了，他之前是多么的一个要强的人哪!可他挡不住社会的风暴和人心的恐怖，终于他被当时的许多人带上了死亡之路。

当然，他自身也有原因，他什么都不会，只有力气，他没有脑子，所以被当时的许多人坑骗。如孙侦探，虎妞，刘四爷等等。“不会!什么也不行，什么也不会，自己只是个傻大黑粗的废物。”这说明当时他什么都不会，只会卖力气，可当时的社会界限是这样——没脑子的被有脑子的统治，而没脑子的呢，则干一些出力的活，他们只配做劳力，因为没有脑子，则无法在社会上立足。
