郭明义参军之前，只是初中学历。在部队时，他抓住“缝隙时间”学习英语。来到矿山工作后，他每天晚上都骑自行车往返20多公里，到市内的夜校学习。

1992年，国家“七五”重点建设项目——齐大山矿扩建工程进入开工准备阶段，郭明义又考入英语强化班进修一年。1993年工程开工后，他担任了33台、每台价值1000多万元、载重量154吨生产汽车——电动轮现场组装的英文翻译。
