他的实验开始着手于灯丝的材料：用传统的炭条作灯丝，一通电灯丝就断了。用钌、铬等金属作灯丝，通电后，亮了片刻就被烧断。用白金丝作灯丝，效果也不理想。就这样，爱迪生试验了1600多种材料。一次次的试验，一次次的失败，很多专家都认为电灯的前途黯淡。英国一些著名专家甚至讥讽爱迪生的研究是“毫无意义的”。一些记者也报道：“爱迪生的理想已成泡影。”爱迪生面对失败，面对所有人的冷嘲热讽，爱迪生没有退却。他明白，失败乃成功之母，每一次的失败，意味着又向成功走近了一步。
