As a correspondent of the Qingdao Morning News, I visited Dr. James Gilman, the President of the International Committee for Marco Polo Studies in England. In this picture, this is James, and this is me and we are looking at a dragon’s tooth. This is a true story.

65 years ago, James lived in Qingdao. Then he was only 5 years old. He often visited the Aquarium and was fascinated by a creature on display there, which he thought was a dragon. He was afraid of its sharp teeth and wanted one to keep as a treasure.

When James visited Qingdao, I accompanied him all the time and reported on his visit. I was deeply touched by his honesty. It has taught me a lot. I think to err is human. The important thing is to have the courage to admit and correct one’s error.

Honesty is a vital quality of human behaviour. So we should try to keep an honest mind in everything we say and do. I would like to say to all of my friends: Let’s be honest people of good moral character.

What is the most important thing in life. Maybe some classmates said "health first", maybe some friends can speak "friendship is the most important". However, if a person is not honest, even if the body again good also useless, even if will have more friends or separate.

A man without letter is not set, the good faith is based on this, the good faith is the soul of a nation. A person without good faith, then he will never know the truth; A company if there is no good faith, then it wont grow; A group if there is no good faith, it will never go too far; A country without honesty, it could not have a foothold in the world. Gorky said: "the integrity of the life road, will have a home to return to have a clear conscience." However, in the life, the good faith as if already lost its former brilliance, lean meat powder, water meat, cooking oil... To follow. Ask: the people of today, what can eat? Is the integrity of our heart already disappeared? Now the technology isnt just to a place like this? This is what we call good faith?

Life such as alcohol, aromatic, or strong, or rich, because honest, become mellow. Life such as song, or high or low, or sorrow, because and trustworthy, becomes the ear. Life picturesque, or bright or dim, or simple but elegant, because good faith, become beautiful.

人生最重要的东西是什么?也许有的同学会说“健康第一位”，也许有的朋友会讲“友谊最重要”。但是，如果一个人不讲诚信，哪怕身体再好也没用，哪怕有再多的朋友也会分开。

人无信不立，诚信是立足之本，诚信是民族之魂。一个人如果没有诚信，那么他永远也不懂得真情;一家企业如果没有诚信，那么它绝对不会发展壮大;一个团体如果没有诚信，那么它绝不会走得太远;一个国家如果没有诚信，那么它不可能立足于世界上。高尔基说过：“走正直诚实的生活道路，定会有一个问心无愧的归宿。”可是，在生活中，诚信好像早已失去了往日的光彩，瘦肉精、注水肉、地沟油……接踵而至。试问：今天的老百姓，还有什么可以吃呢?难道我们心中的诚信早已消失了吗?现在的技术难道就只用到这种地方吗?这难道就是我们所说的诚信吗?

生活如酒，或芳香，或浓烈，或馥郁，因为诚实，变得醇厚。生活如歌，或高昂，或低沉，或悲戚，因为守信，变得悦耳。生活如画，或明丽，或黯淡，或素雅，因为诚信，变得美丽。

Once upon a time, I did not pay for my bill when I bought a pen, because

the boss forgot to charge me, so I pretended to not realize it and just walk

away with the pen. Many years passed, every time when I think of it, I will be

ashamed of myself, I lost the important thing once, but I will not lose it

again.

The merit of honesty occupies great importance today. In the old time,

without the camera’s supervisor, people kept their honesty according to their

self-consciousness. It seems that if they are not honest, they would not get any

punishment. But today, as the technology develops, people are supervised by the

high-technologies all the time, once they are caught cheating, their files will

have the spot, which affect their career badly.

We are living in the modern life, we need to self-behaved, what we do is

under the invisible cameras’ watching. Even we make the small mistake, we will

be recorded without noticed. What we do decides what kind of person we are, so

let’s be an honest person all the time.

Today, with the development of Internet, many traditional ways of life have

been changed, especially the way to pay for purchase. The record of credit

occupies important role for everybody, and they need good credit to get loan, so

as to start their business or buy a house. We have come to the age of

credit.

There is a very classic example about the importance of credit. A Chinese

man took the train in Europe. He found no one checked the ticket, so he just

skipped the ticket. He thought he had saved the little money, but when he came

to the bank and wanted to get the loan, he got rejected, because his record of

credit showed he had skipped the ticket, which made him the unreliable man.

The record of credit is the main basis when people asked for loan. The

banks consider the account of money they would borrow according to the credit,

or the departments will check a person’s credit to see if they want to hire him.

The age of credit asks for us to behave ourselves well, or we will live the

tough life.

It Pays to Be Honest

Nowadays people are troubled with mass of dishonest behaviors in society. Teachers get annoyed when they catch students cheating on exams; consumers get hurt when they unfortunately buy some fake products; children are misled when they see their parents tell lies so as to evade the responsibility they should take.

Why do people cheat? The main reason probably lies in immediate interest they may obtain by cheating. For example, a company, which manufactures fake products, may seem to win for a moment because it can minimize its manufacture cost by doing so. This kind of businesses, however, will be driven out of the market in the long run. For the consumers after getting to know the poor quality of the products will not buy them anymore.

The same is true of individuals. Dishonest people dare not take on the responsibility of life. They cheat in class, in office, at home and so on. But the truth can hardly be masked. The moment the truth comes out they will lose their credibility, which is easier to destroy than to rebuild. Consequently, these dishonest will suffer a long time because of their cheating behaviors. In conclusion, no one can afford to be dishonest in a civilized society.

Honesty is the pillar of a society. People will benefit from being honest in the long run. Thats why we say it pays to be honest.

诚实是有好处的

现在人们往往困扰在社会大众不诚信行为。当他们抓住教师动怒的学生考试作弊,消费者受到伤害,当他们不幸的是买一些假冒伪劣商品的人,当他们看到孩子们被误导了他们的父母说谎,他们应该采取逃避责任。

人们为什么要欺骗?主要原因可能在于他们可能得到的直接利益欺骗。例如,一个公司,制造假冒伪劣产品,似乎赢得了一会,因为它能减少其制造成本,这样做。这种业务,然而,会被挤出市场的长远发展。消费者在了解产品质量低劣也买不到他们了。

同样的情况也发生的个体。不诚实的人,不敢承担范文园地责任的生活。他们欺骗在课堂上,在办公室里,他在家里等。但事实很难被掩没。真理出来的那一刻,他们将失去他们的信誉,这是更容易破坏比重建。因此,这些不诚实的将会受到了很长一段时间,因为他们的欺骗行为。总之,没有人能支付得起的不诚实的在一个文明的社会。

诚信是一个社会的支柱。人民将从中获益,诚实的长远发展。这就是为什么我们说诚实是有好处的。
