据统计，一亩树林一年可以吸收灰尘20—60吨；每天能吸收67公斤二氧化碳，释放49公斤氧气，足可供65个成年人呼吸；一亩树林一个月可以吸收有毒气体——二氧化硫千公斤；一亩松柏一昼夜能分泌出2公斤杀菌素，可杀死肺结核、伤寒、百喉、痢疾等疾病的病苗。这样就能净化空气，保障人们的身心健康。植树造林还能减少噪音，美化环境，保持生态平衡；为人们提供理想的学习、工作、娱乐和生活的环境。在意识到树木不可缺少这一点以后，人类开始种植树木：自1981年12月以来，中国全民义务植树累计超过350亿株。中国正在实施“三北”和长江中下游地区重点防护林建设、退耕还林还草、野生动植物保护及自然保护区建设、天然林保护等六大林业重点工程。至2000年底，中国的森林覆盖率已达16。55%，城市建城区人均公共绿地提高到6。52平方米，全国自然保护区总面积超过1亿公顷。据中国气象部门记录，20世纪50年代中国仅发生过5次强沙尘暴，进入90年代，则发生了23次。沙尘天气给中国社会经济造成了巨大的损失。环境污染使人类意识到环境保护的重要性。人类文明，无论在那一个发展阶段还是在整个的历史长河中，都是始终受制于人类对自然界的认识程度。当我们从这个意义上重新打量人类文明的功过时，我们便没有足够的信心来赞美今天的人类文明了，至少我们不能盲目地加以赞美。因为，直到目前，我们对自然界地认识还十分有限。可以确定无疑的是，人类只是大自然中的一员，人类的一切危害自然行为最终都将受自然的惩罚。因而，我们就不得不对当今的人类文明进行全面的检讨，也不得不对未来的人类文明深怀忧虑。

面对日益恶化的地球生态环境，人类至今都不肯放弃局部的利益，使自己的欲望日益膨胀。而人类欲望越强烈，对生态环境的、破坏也就越严重。 人类文明是地球生物圈里光照四方的伟大奇迹，它能否永久的延续下去，并不断达到新的文明高度，以致照耀久远未来的地球子民，它的命运就掌握在人类自己的手里。人类！醒悟吧！请珍惜我们赖以生存的地球，请真正做到“美丽环境——健康人类——文明发展”。
