如今，淮南的陆路交通线四通八达；铁路建设始于世纪30年代淮南煤矿开采期间，1936年淮南铁路（田家庵—裕溪口）的建成通车，成为沟通淮河与长江之间陆路运输的最例捷形式。50年代，淮南的铁路建设发展很快，建成了贯通全市东西的大（通）八（公山）线，全线设立了10座火车站（如今已发展为16座火车站）。70年代，随着阜（阳）淮（南）铁路的兴建，一座气势雄伟的公路铁路两用桥横跨淮河，成为千里淮河第一桥。
