《诗经》约成书于 春秋中期，起初叫做《诗》， 孔子曾多次提及此称，如：“《诗》三百，一言以蔽之，曰：‘思无邪’” [3] 。“诵《诗》三百，授之以政，不达;使于四方，不能专对。虽多，亦奚以为?” [4]

司马迁记载的也是这一名称，如：“《诗》三百篇，大抵贤圣发愤之所为作也。” [5]
