时至今日，大约没有人再相信《毛诗序》所谓“《关雎》，后妃之德也”一类的话了。说《关雎》大约是经过加工的一首民间恋歌，恐怕不会去事实太远。但《齐》、《鲁》、《韩》三家(包括司马迁、刘向)说此诗，都以为它意存讽刺。这又该作何解释?另外，古人很强调“四始”说(即《关雎》为“风”之始，《鹿鸣》为“小雅”之始，《文王》为“大雅”之始，《清庙》为“颂”之始)，认为把《关雎》列为十五国风的第一篇，是有意义的，并非编排上偶然形成的结果。这些都需要我们作出说明。

我以为，无论今文学派的《齐》、《鲁》、《韩》三家诗也好，古文学派的《毛诗》也好，他们解诗，都存在两个问题:一是不理解绝大多数“国风”是民歌，把每一首诗都拉到帝王、后妃或列国诸侯的君、夫人身上;二是把作诗的本意和后来的引申意混同起来。三家诗看到《关雎》中有“求之不得，寤寐思服;悠哉悠哉，展转反侧”的话，便扯到周康王身上，说诗意是讽刺他“失德晏起”，正如司马迁在《十二诸侯年表序》中所说:“周道缺，诗人本之衽席，《关雎》作。”而后来的《毛诗》为了同三家诗唱对台戏，于是一反今文家法，大讲“后妃之德”云云，目的在于说它不是刺诗而是赞美之辞。如果我们认识到十五国风中确有不少民歌，并排除了断章取义的方式方法，则三家诗也好，《毛诗》也好，他们人为地加给此诗的迷雾都可一扫而空，诗的真面目也就自然显露出来了。

至于把《关雎》列为“国风”之始，我以为这倒是人情之常。古人原有这样的说法，认为《三百篇》所以被保存下来，乃由于它们是能歌唱的乐章而于诗义无涉，故有些讽刺诗或大胆泼辣的爱情诗也没有被统治阶级删除淘汰。我则以为，从《三百篇》的内容看，总还是先把各地的诗歌搜集起来然后为它们配乐，所配之乐，必不能丝毫不关涉诗的内容，而任意用不相干的乐谱去牵合。《关雎》之所以为“风”之始，恐怕同内容仍有关联。由于诗中有“琴瑟友之”、“钟鼓乐之”的词句，很适合结婚时歌唱，于是就把它配上始而缠绵悱恻、终则喜气洋洋的乐调，而沿用为结婚时的奏鸣曲。盖因恋爱而“寤寐思服”、“展转反侧”乃人之常情，故虽哀而不伤(“哀”有动听感人的意思);夫妇结婚原属正理，君子淑女相配并不违反封建伦常，故虽乐而不淫。这样，自然就把它列为“国风”之首了。直到今日，我们遇到喜庆节日，也还是要唱一些欢快热闹的歌，奏一些鼓舞人心的曲子，取其顺心如意。这并不是什么迷信，而是同喜庆节日的气氛相适应。如果办喜事时奏哀乐唱悼亡诗，撇开吉利与否的迷信观点不谈，至少产生败兴和杀风景的反效果，总是招人憎厌的。《三百篇》的乐章既为统治阶级所制定，当然要图个吉利，把体现喜庆气氛的作品列于篇首。这不仅符合他们本阶级的利益，即从人情之常来讲，也是理当如此。

如今的读书人有更多的中间道路可以选择：经商、从军、自由职业等等。这固然是时代的进步，但传统意义的读书人总是迂腐地选择一种极端，一种用毕生热情去热爱和创造的东西。因此他们之中的杰出者不断走上人类某个领域的顶峰，成为千古不朽的大师级人物，如一生只写一部书的李时珍、曹雪芹。相比之下，当代名家充其量不过一巧匠。

所谓“太上有立德，其次有立功，其次有立言”——即内圣外王，不得已立言。内圣立德，外王立功，不能实际举帝王之业，以推圣人之道，才退而立言。著书立说为最后，不得以后为之。恍然明白相声大师马三立简单名字的深刻内涵。

“窈窕淑女，君子好逑”，“一日不见，如三秋兮”，“执子之手，与子偕老”。我常常流连往返于诗经中这些让人陶醉的诗句中。《诗经》本称“诗”，是中国最早的诗歌总集，被儒家列为经典之一。《诗经》编成于春秋时代，共三百零五篇。诗歌形式以四言为主，运用赋、比、兴的手法，其优美篇章描写生动，语言朴素优美，声音自然和谐，富有艺术感染力。

在《诗经》里不但看不到古时人们的闭塞，愚昧与保守，而且应该说她所表现出来的纯洁的爱情，过人的智慧，积极的生活态度，对现实的满足和对未来美好的憧憬完全是超越现代、超越时空的!
