Im Alina Li and Im Ben Hedges, and today well be taking you through some of the most important traditions of Chinese new year and historical background. We will look at some of the legends behind Chinese new year and how to celebrate it. Here in the US and Chinese across the world.

The Chinese have specific way to celebrate their new year. If you walk down the street in Chinatown during Chinese New Year, you see a variety of ancient traditions such as red banners, firecrackers and lion dance performances, streets are filled with lively celebration.

However, legend has said that the new year has not always been a time of festivity. An Asian Chinese story told a chilly start to this festive holiday, it begins with an ancient Chinese beast called Nian.

Every New Year Nian would rise from swelling in the sea to ravage Chinese village in livestock and hurting people. The villages soon found out from a wise gray-haired old man that the only way to scare the beast away was to set off firecrackers and light lamps and to hang red banners on each door. As the story goes, this was the beginning of a tradition that would last thousands of years.

So this story leads to the creation of many of other traditions for celebrating Chinese New Year. lets take a look at some of these traditions.

Chinese Lunar New Year,or Spring Festival falls on January 1st according to the lunar calendar,usually around the late January or early February.As the start of spring as well as a new year,it is the most important celebration of the year.Each family get reunited during the New Year.On the Eve,there is a big dinner for the family when each member return to get together.

The biggest New Years party is held on CCTV.Hundreds of people gather there,meanwhile millions of others all over the country were sitting in front of the screen to watch excellent performances for more than four hours continuously.The bell strike twelve at midnight to welcome the coming of the New Year or Spring.People start to set off firecraks and say "Happy New Year" to each other.

Last holiday, I went to the rural grandmothers home with my sisters for a holiday. The sky in the country is more lovely than the city, the air is so fresh, the sky is so bright, and the people are happy. On the days before the New Year celebration Chinese families give their home a thorough cleaning. There is a Cantonese saying "Wash away the dirt on ninyabaat" (年廿八，洗邋遢), but the practice is not usually restricted on ninyabaat (年廿八, the 28th day of month 12). Brooms and dust pans are put away on the first day so that luck cannot be swept away. In many households where Buddhism or Taoism is prevalent, home altars and statues are cleaned thoroughly, and altars that were adorned with decorations from the previous year are also taken down and burned a week before the new year starts, and replaced with new decorations. The biggest event of any Chinese New Years Eve is the dinner every family will have. A dish consisting of fish will appear on the tables of Chinese families. It is for display for the New Years Eve dinner. This meal is comparable to Christmas dinner in the West. In northern China, it is customary to make dumplings (jiaozi 饺子) after dinner and have it around midnight. Dumplings symbolize wealth because their shape is like a Chinese tael. By contrast, in the South, it is customary to make a new year cake (Niangao, 年糕) after dinner and send pieces of it as gifts to relatives and friends in the coming days of the new year. Niangao literally means increasingly prosperous year in year out. After the dinner, some families go to local temples, hours before the new year begins to pray for a prosperous new year by lighting the first incense of the year; however in modern practice, many households hold parties and even hold a countdown to the new lunar year. This day is dedicated to the General Guan Yu, also known as the Chinese God of War. Guan Yu was born in the Han dynasty and is considered the greatest general in Chinese history. He represents loyalty, strength, truth, and justice. According to history, he was tricked by the enemy and was beheaded.

Almost every organization and business in China will pray to Guan Yu on this day. Before his life ended, Guan Yu had won over one hundred battles and that is a goal that all businesses in China want to accomplish. In a way, people look at him as the God of Wealth or the God of Success.

The Spring Festival is my most favorite festival, because it’s time for family gathering. And the Spring Festival is a new start of a year. It brings me hope and courage. On Spring Festival, my parents usually take me back to my hometown. My hometown is a small town. Many of my relatives move to the larger cities, but we usually go home when the Spring Festival comes. During the gathering, we share our lives with others and care about each other. Of course, big meals are necessary. Families prepare for the big meals together. They all cook their specialty dishes. Therefore, our meals are always delicious. We often stay at home for three days and then we leave with others’ wishes. I like the Spring Festival, because I like family gathering.

The Lunar New Year is now popularly known as the Spring Festival because it starts from the Begining of Spring . Its origin is too old to be traced. Several explanations are hanging around. All agree, however, that the word Nian, which in modern Chinese solely means year , was originally the name of a monster beast that started to prey on people the night before the beginning of a new year.

One legend goes that the beast Nian had a very big mouth that would swallow a great many people with one bite. People were very scared. One day, an old man came to their rescue, offering to subdue Nian. To Nian he said, I hear say that you are very capable, but can you swallow the other beasts of prey on earth instead of people who are by no means of your worthy opponents? So, it did swallow many of the beasts of prey on earth that also harassed people and their domestic animals from time to time.

After that, the old man disappeared riding the beast Nian. He turned out to be an immortal god. Now that Nian is gone and other beasts of prey are also scared into forests, people begin to enjoy their peaceful life. Before the old man left, he had told people to put up red paper decorations on their windows and doors at each year s end to scare away Nian in case it sneaked back again, because red is the color the beast feared the most.

From then on, the tradition of observing the conquest of Nian is carried on from generation to generation. I had a wonderful time this Spring Festival, we all put on new clothes, get the lucky money, taste the delicious food, play to the manifold blessings that lie in the fireworks firecracker, saw the wonderful Spring Festival gala... The most memorable to me is that colourful fireworks!

Since to the flower market and bought after the fireworks, Ive been looking forward to the arrival of the year, because the day can play to fun interesting fireworks.

Finally, the day arrived, I was so happy in my heart, like eat the doping! 自从逛完花市，买了烟花之后，我就一直盼望着大年三十的到来，因为那天就可以玩到好玩有趣的烟花了。

终于，这天来到了，我心里高兴极了，像吃了兴奋剂一样!吃完年夜饭，我兴高采烈地和爸爸拿着烟花和炮来到三楼平台放，“霹雳啪啦，霹雳啪啦”，三楼已经有很多人在打鞭炮庆祝新年了。我也迫不及待地拿出一个像炸弹的炮让爸爸点，自己却像个逃命的小兔子一样跑得远远地了!这个炮开始旋转了，旋转的同时还喷出金黄色的火焰，火焰喷完了，就跳起来霹雳啪啦地打起鞭炮来。哇，原来这个炮这么丰富多彩呀!我又拿出一个像魔方盒的火箭炮，爸爸点燃了导火线，盒子里25个小炮带着响声陆续飞上天，在天空中绽开迷人的花朵，我也兴奋地跳起来，真想和它们比比高低呀!

真是太奇妙了呀!我发自内心地感叹到。突然，一声巨响把我吓了一跳，原来，对面的小区在放大型烟花呢!那绽开的烟花像一朵朵绚丽的鲜花，那些美丽的鲜花的颜色可真多呀，有红的、绿的、白的、黄的……看着看着，我仿佛走进了美丽的花的海洋，到处都是五颜六色、千姿百态的花朵……

spring festival ,known as the chinese new year, is the most important holiday in china.from late january to early february,chinese people are busy preparing for the new year.they clean their houses ,have their hair cut,and buy new clothes .jiaozi or dumpling is most popular.to those who live far away from their home,this festival is also a framily reunion occasion.

and they often go back home to celebrate the festival with their family.the first day of the new year is the time when people visit their friends adn wish each other good luck in the new year.

He added that Li Xinmin alone was born in the year of the dog and the other three were all born in the year of the chicken. They left us all in confusion. This time Li Xinmin was placed in the middle of the circle. While he was standing there，the other three stood around him，each bowing down to him at an angle of 120 degrees. It was an idiom.
