Here is a difference between science and technology.Science is a method of

answering theoretical questions; technology is a method of solving practical

problems. Science has to do with discovering the facts and relationships between

observable phenomena in nature and with establishing theories that serve to

organize these facts and relationships; technology has to do with

tools,techniques, and procedures for implementing the findings of science.

Another distinction between science and technology has to do with the

progress in each. Progress in science excludes the human factor. Scientists, who

seek to comprehend the universe and know the truth with the highest degree of

accuracy and certainty, cannot pay heed to their own or other peoples likes or

dislikes, or to popular ideas about the fitness of things. What scientists

discover may shock or anger people--as did Darwins theory of evolution. But

even an unpleasant truth is more than likely to be useful; besides, we have the

option of refusing to believe it! But hardly so with technology;we do not have

the option of refusing to hear the sonic boom produced by a supersonic

aircraft-flying overhead; we do not have the option of refusing to breathe

polluted air. Unlike science, progress in technology must be our slave and not

the reverse. The legitimate purpose of technology is to serve peopie--people in

general, not merely some people; and future generations, not merely those who

presently wish to gain advantage for themselves.

We are all familiar with the abuses of technology. Many people blame

technology itself for widespread pollution, resource depletion and even social

decay in general--so much so that the promise of technology is obscured. That

promise is a cleaner and healthier world. If wise applications of science and

technology do not lead to a better world, what else will?

在游客中心稍作停留后，我们继续上坡前行。周围林木渐渐稀疏低矮，覆盖着碎石散沙的山坡大片裸露，大概是火山爆发留下的产物吧，不时还看到一些积雪。不多久，眼前豁然开朗，火山口湖好似梦幻一般出现在我眼前。我只有张大嘴巴惊呆的份儿了。只见一大片湛蓝的湖水，像一块巨大无比的蓝色美玉般静静地定格在峭壁和群山环绕的天然怀抱之中。它蓝得那样深邃，那样纯净，仿佛大自然把它所有的蓝都倾囊相赠，这才犹如一潭蓝色浓墨般，蓝得让人惊叹，美得令人陶醉。湖水和天色融为一体，分不清是碧水映在天上，还是蓝天倒映在水中。湖面水平如镜，静得难以看到一丝波纹。我的心，也慢慢被这蓝色融化，此刻，所有烦恼都被我抛到脑后，我的心里只余下安然和宁静。

往山顶上走，换个角度看，这片面积为54平方公里的湖泊尽收眼底。火山口像一个巨大的“弹坑”，周边都是火山爆发后遗留下来的熔岩峭壁，在晴空下泛着金刚石般的光泽;而火山口湖恰似蓝宝石般镶嵌其中，散发出迷人的光芒。大自然遗留下的鬼斧神工在这里体现得淋漓尽致，令人叹为观止。

俯瞰着火山口湖那宽达数公里的蔚蓝湖面时，很多人都会像我一样提出一个问题：为何会在山顶上出现湖泊?为什么湖水又是这么蓝呢?

原来，约7000年前，这座古老的火山曾经爆发，火山爆发后，空心的地壳下陷， 形成了一个深约579米的“弹坑”。久而久之，弹坑里积满了雨水和融化的雪水，逐渐形成了一个深湖，这就是火山口湖。由于整个湖完全与外界水源隔绝，所以湖水中仅有极少的矿物质，并且几乎不含任何杂质。当光线折射入水中，水吸收了大部分光线，而反射出来的就是光谱最短的蓝色。湖水越深，反射出来的蓝光就越深邃。因此，这个巨大的碗状湖泊实际上是火山活动的产物。

我们顺着一条弯弯曲曲的小径下行去岸边，一路上发现湖面一侧竟然漂浮着大片的黄色粉状物。难道这里也有污染?我到处寻找答案。再一看，原来紧靠着湖的山上有很多松树，前段时间正值松树的花期，风一吹，松花就不偏不倚地落入湖中，于是“近水楼台先得月”，湖水的一部分就呈现出这样一种蓝中透黄的色彩了。

该说再见了，美丽的火山口湖，我要把你梦幻般的蓝印在脑海里，把你仙境般的美和天堂般的宁静永远留在我的记忆中。
