朱耀宗喜滋滋地日夜兼程,回家拜见母亲。当朱耀宗向娘述说了树立贞节牌坊一事后,原本欢天喜地的朱母一下子惊呆了,脸上露出不安的神色,欲言又止,似有难言之隐。

朱耀宗大惑不解,惊愕地问:

“娘,您老哪儿不舒服?”

“心口痛着哩。”

“怎么说痛就痛起来了?”

“儿呀,”朱母大放悲声,

“你不知道做寡妇的痛苦,长夜秉烛,垂泪天明,好不容易将你熬出了头!娘现在想着有个伴儿安度后半生,有件事我如今告诉你,娘要改嫁,这贞节牌坊我是无论如何不能接受的。”

“娘,您要嫁谁?”

“你的恩师张文举。”

听了娘的回答,好似晴天一声炸雷,毫无思想准备的朱耀宗顿时被击倒了,“扑通”一下跪在娘的面前:

“娘,这千万使不得。您改嫁叫儿的脸面往哪儿搁?再说,这‘欺君之罪’难免杀身之祸啊!”

朱母一时语塞,在儿子和恋人之间无法做到两全其美。

原来,朱耀宗八岁时丧父,朱母陈秀英强忍年轻丧夫的悲痛,她见儿子聪明好学,读书用功,特意聘请有名的秀才张文举执教家中。由于张文举教育有方,朱耀宗学业长进很快。

朱母欢喜,对张文举愈加敬重。朝夕相处,张文举的人品和才华深深打动了陈秀英的芳心,张文举对温柔贤惠的陈秀英也产生了爱慕之情,两人商定,待到朱耀宗成家立业后正式结婚,白首偕老。

殊不料,这桩姻缘却要被蒙在鼓里的朱耀宗无意中搅黄了,出现了这样尴尬的局面。

解铃还须系铃人。正值左右为难之际,朱母不由长叹一声:

“那就听天由命吧。”

她说着随手解下身上一件罗裙,告诉朱耀宗说:

“明天你替我把裙子洗干净,一天一夜晒干,如果裙子晒干,我便答应不改嫁;如果裙子不干,天意如此,你也就不用再阻拦了。”

这一天晴空朗日,朱耀宗心想这事并不难做。便点头同意。谁知当夜阴云密布,天明下起暴雨,裙子始终是湿漉漉的,朱耀宗心中叫苦不迭,知是天意。

陈秀英则认认真真地对儿子说:

“孩子,天要下雨,娘要嫁人,天意不可违!”

事已至此,多说无益。朱耀宗只得将母亲和恩师的婚事如实报告皇上,请皇上治罪。皇上连连称奇,降道御旨:“不知者不怪罪,天作之合,由她去吧。”

从此,人们便把“天要下雨,娘要嫁人”这句话,用来形容天意如此,谁也逆转不了的事情。
