I have recently read Battle Hymn of Tiger Mother published by The Penguin Press in 2011. This autobiography was written by the Chinese American woman Amy Chua, a tenured professor in Yale Law School. She causes a sensation because her strict but unique parenting which brings excellent performance of her two daughters.

This autobiography tells the course of Amy Chua how she raised the two daughters in Chinese parenting way. It is divided into three parts. At the first part, it gives some introductions of the two daughters, the family. And in the second and third parts, the writer tells more details in the process of raising her two different daughters and the difficulties she was confronted in the process, and most importantly the success the daughters achieved in music which brought Amy Chua pride as well as the whole family.

To some extent, I don’t like Amy’s parenting in some aspects. In my opinion, she deprived the nature of children and pushed too much pressure on their children, especially on Lulu who was under the shadow of her excellent elder daughter—Sophia. While I was reading the third part in the rebellion part, I couldn’t control my own emotion, I felt what Lulu felt and even hated against her selfish and autocratic mother. I couldn’t understand why Amy didn’t let Lulu get up from sit, for water, not even to go to the bathroom when Lulu just wanted a rest during the long hours’ practice of violin. She made Lulu practice violin all day during the family’s vacation abroad. She spoiled the vacation by letting the other family members waiting the practice. She was unreasonable.

But next what I do is to admire her.

There is an old Chinese saying “property can never last for three generations”。 But Amy Chua did change it! Her parents came to U.S and suffered a tough life at the very beginning. They taught Amy math and piano in an extreme strict way when she was a kid. Under the influence of her parents, now Amy is frugal and pretty strict with her daughters and herself. They are the valuable points of her. Although she is so extreme on her parenting, she has the advisable ideas that the parents and the parents to be to learn.

Firstly, as parents, they couldn’t ignore their children and put all focus on their job. There is no excuse for not concerning their children. Except supervising her daughters, Amy Chua has to give lessons in university, write books and handle the family chores. She is so busy, but she doesn’t ignore the daughters.

Secondly, parents should be strict with their children especially when they are kids because kids lack of self-control. They should not indulge their children in internet or sleepovers.

Thirdly, parents should master some skills in parenting. As a matter of fact, there are so many Chinese parents who are strict with their children with no avail of success. Success can’t be totally copied, because some parents ignore the skills in parenting. When their children don’t follow their will or perform well enough to satisfy them, they will lose their temper and even beat their children, yes, of course, Amy Chua will be mad but she won’t beat her daughters, in this condition, she will be sober and wait until her daughters perform well enough. She learnt some music knowledge in her children’s class and supervised them patiently. She knew where to correct the mistakes and gave the children extraordinary success.

The Day Is Waning and the Road Is Ending

In the Spring and Autumn Period, Duke Ping of Chu was misled by slanderers, and had Wu Zixu"s father executed. Wu Zixu fled to the State of Wu. More than then years later, Wu Zixu took his revenge by helping. Wu conquer Chu. Yet he suffered agonies of remorse, because his countrymen called him a traitor. Its simple plot relates the misfortunes of the loyal Christian slave, Tom, who, deprived of familial love and affection and destined for the harsh life of plantation slavery, doesn’t rebel or curse God, but philosophically accepts his cruel fate. He could leap overboard Cold River to save the drowning daughter of a wealthy white passenger who gratefully rewards the brave Negro by buying him.

But the child dies of tuberculosis, having first elicited a promise from her father to free the loyal Tom. The father is killed , however, in a brawl before he can fulfill his pledge and his widow is forced to sell Tom, who becomes the property of the heartless Simon Legree. He soon learns how really harsh the life of plantation can be, but he remains true to his religious training, elated by his pious acceptance of God’s will. Harassed by the evil Legree ,Tom displays his Christian charity by refusing to flog another slave .Simon Legree may not own Tom’s soul ,but he can do as he chooses with the body, and he orders two of his slaves, Sambo and Quimba, to whip the unresisting Tom, whose only responses to the merciless beating is a plea to stop in order that Legree might save his own soul.

On his deathbed, Tom charitably forgives the harsh Legree. Ironically, he lives long enough to witness the arrival of his former master’s son, come to redeem the family pledge by buying him back and granting his freedom.

The theme of Uncle Tom’s Cabin, for its all apparent simplicity, is representative of much of 19th century American fiction of the good man opposed by evil personified under the circumstance of slavery.

What strikes me is Tom’s loyalty to his religious belief. I’ve been wondering where one’s childlike purity has gone when he or she grows up. To find the answer, I read The Little Prince, which is a fairy tale for adult and fable about life, written by Antoine de Saint Exupéry.

The story of The Little Prince is about a prince from an asteroid named B-612, which is a fairly small one, with three volcanoes and a rose on it. The prince spent his days caring for his "planet", sweeping the volcanoes and pulling out the baobab trees that would make his little planet turn to dust if they were not removed. However, he was lonely. He watched the sunset every time he was down. He had seen the sunset forty-three times in a day, for endless loneliness and sadness filled up his heart. Fortunately, a beautiful rose enriched his life. She loved the distressed prince, while the prince loved her sincerely as well. Unluckily, the sensitive prince once doubted about love due to the rose’s anger, and he left his rose as well as his planet to start his lonely journey.

After visiting six other asteroids, he came to the earth. He met a fox and tamed it. It was the fox who taught the prince that his rose was in a class by herself. The prince began to realized that he was tamed by his rose, he responsible for her. As a result, he was eager to see his rose again, but he found himself unable to leave the earth. Finally, the prince chose to go back to his asteroid with the snake’s bite, though he felt afraid of pains.

Every time I read The Little Prince, I am moved by the prince’s attitude toward the world. It is his attitude that brings my sincerity and innocence back. Because of the story of the little prince, I have learnt to live a peaceful life with hope, gentleness, touching, and responsibility about tameness in my heart.

Helen Keller is an American blind and deaf writer and handicapped educator. Born on June 27, 1880 in northern Alabama, a town called taskama biya. She lost her sight and hearing in nineteen months, and then she lost her language skills. In this dark and lonely world, however, she learned to read and speak for her mentor, Anne Sullivan, and began to communicate with others. He graduated from Radcliffe college with honors and became a famous writer and educator with five languages of English, French, German, Latin and Greek. She has won praise from all over the world and has been honoured by many national governments. Helen Keller became blind and deaf as a child, but she went through college with great difficulty. She has written more than a dozen works in her life, while working to save children, protect womens rights and fight for racial equality. He was awarded the presidential medal of freedom in 1964.

She groped her way up in the dark. At the age of seven, the family hired a tutor for her, the teacher who influenced Helens life. Nine hours before and after, all subjects passed, English and German were the best grades, Helen started college with a keen heart.

In June 1904, Helen graduated from Radcliffe with honors. Two years later, she was appointed chairman of the Massachusetts blind committee and began a social work for the blind. She received the visiting blind people every day, and returned the same letters. Later on, she toured the country, traveling for the promotion of blind blind education plans and treatment plans. By 1921, the American foundation for the blind was finally founded. Helen, one of the groups leaders, has been working hard to strengthen the foundations work.
