Now known as the Palace Museum, it is to the north of Tiananmen Square. Rectangular in shape, it is the worlds largest palace complex and covers 74 hectares. Surrounded by a six meter deep moat and a ten meter high wall are 9,999 buildings. The wall has a gate on each side. Opposite the Tiananmen Gate, to the north is the Gate of Devine Might (Shenwumen), which faces Jingshan Park. The distance between these two gates is 960 meters, while the distance between the gates in the east and west walls is 750 meters. There are unique and delicately structured towers on each of the four corners of the curtain wall. These afford views over both the palace and the city outside. The Forbidden City is divided into two parts. The southern section, or the Outer Court was where the emperor exercised his supreme power over the nation. The northern section, or the Inner Court was where he lived with his royal family. Until 1924 when the last emperor of China was driven from the Inner Court, fourteen emperors of the Ming dynasty and ten emperors of the Qing dynasty had reigned here. Having been the imperial palace for some five centuries, it houses numerous rare treasures and curiosities. Listed by UNESCO as a World Cultural Heritage Site in 1987, the Palace Museum is now one of the most popular tourist attractions world wide.

Construction of the palace complex began in 1407, the 5th year of the Yongle reign of the third emperor of the Ming dynasty. It was completed fourteen years later in 1420. It was said that a million workers including one hundred thousand artisans were driven into the long-term hard labor. Stone needed was quarried from Fangshan, a suburb of Beijing. It was said a well was dug every fifty meters along the road in order to pour water onto the road in winter to slide huge stones on ice into the city. Huge amounts of timber and other materials were freighted from faraway provinces. Ancient Chinese people displayed their very considerable skills in building the Forbidden City. Take the grand red city wall for example. It has an 8.6 meters wide base reducing to 6.66 meters wide at the top. The angular shape of the wall totally frustrates attempts to climb it. The bricks were made from white lime and glutinous rice while the cement is made from glutinous rice and egg whites. These incredible materials make the wall extraordinarily strong.

Since yellow is the symbol of the royal family, it is the dominant color in the Forbidden City. Roofs are built with yellow glazed tiles; decorations in the palace are painted yellow; even the bricks on the ground are made yellow by a special process. However, there is one exception. Wenyuange, the royal library, has a black roof. The reason is that it was believed black represented water then and could extinguish fire.

Nowadays, the Forbidden City, or the Palace Museum is open to tourists from home and abroad. Splendid painted decoration on these royal architectural wonders, the grand and deluxe halls, with their surprisingly magnificent treasures will certainly satisfy "modern civilians".

今天我带着愉快地心情踏上了去北京旅游的路程。

我们先做车到上海，一路上，公路两旁，一棵棵大树犹如一个个绿色卫兵，在帮我们挡住风沙，暴雨，一座座立交桥，犹如道道彩虹，远处一幢幢高楼大夏顶立在天地之间。我还没年够风景，就到了飞机场。我登上了飞机，飞机起飞了，我透过窗户往外看，房子和汽车越来越小了，一会儿就穿过了云层，啊!飞机好象在雪地上飞，一朵朵白云有的像小狗，有的像小猫，还有的象其它动物，可好看了。我们很快就到了北京。住进了宾馆休息，准备明天的旅游。

国庆节到了，妈妈趁放假带我去北京玩，想到自己就要零距离的接触到美丽的北京了，我的心里乐开了花。

坐上舒适漂亮的“和谐号”动车组列车，经过三小时的路程，终于来到了北京。一下火车我和妈妈就迫不及待地去了“鸟巢”和“水立方”。“鸟巢”是国家体育场的俗称，远远望去它就像鸟儿衔树枝精工细作的鸟窝，只不过编织鸟窝的不是树枝，泥土，而是一根根又粗又长的钢铁。我想：所有的鸟儿看到这么巨大的鸟巢都会惊呆的。

鸟巢的对面就是国家游泳中心，俗称“水立方”。从外面望上去水立方的形状像是许许多多的气泡叠在一起，每一个气泡都有一平方米大小，摸上去滑溜溜的，闪着银色的光芒。听妈妈说滑溜溜的原因是让灰尘和污垢在上面站不住脚，即使有些浮尘，下点小雨马上就会清洁如新的。这个设计者的妙想真是了不起!

夜幕降临的时候，鸟巢内亮起一盏盏红色的灯，远远望去，像是一个献给祖国妈妈的巨大型生日蛋糕。夜晚的水立方更加漂亮迷人，每一个气泡都发出夺目的蓝色亮光，那梦幻般的水蓝色，就像大海的颜色，给夜晚的北京增添了一道亮丽的风景线。

参观完奥体中心，我们来到了闻名中外的天安门广场。因为今年是祖国六十华诞，所以广场上人山人海，热闹非凡。首先映入眼帘的是天安门广场东面耸立着的民族柱。56根红色的民族柱代表56个民族，整齐地挺立在广场的两侧。每一根柱子上都雕刻着一对男女，身穿民族服装载歌载舞的样子，非常喜庆。广场上整齐地停放着“十一”阅兵时的彩车，供游人们观赏。这些来自全国各省的彩车五彩缤纷，各具特色。其中我最喜欢的彩车是天津的“滨海新貌”。它的外形是一艘巨大的轮船，轮船上耸立着一组白色的航天飞船，飞船的旁边遨游着一只人造卫星。这只卫星就像鸟儿似的展翅欲飞。在飞船下面有一些高楼大厦，标志着天津日新月异的面貌。我觉得这辆彩车非常新颖，漂亮，就站在那里久久不愿离去。

美好的时光总是觉得过得很快，不知不觉中结束了北京之行。我恋恋不舍，希望下次放寒假还能再来北京玩!

Beijing has a history of over 3,000 years with a population of nearly 13

million and a lot of places of interest around it. In recent years, the city of

Beijing has been advancing very quickly. You can see more museums, parks an

shopping centers here and there. More and more highways and overhead walkways

have been built up. Whats more, a lot more buses which burn cleaner fuel, such

as CNG or LPG, are put into use, to prevent air from being polluted. Water in

the rivers is clean again. Wherever you go, you can see green trees, grass and

beautiful flowers. All these make life in Beijing more convenient, pleasant and

colorful. Beijing is still advancing to the bright future.

Beijing has a long history . There are lots of places of interest .

Every year lots of travellers go sightseeing . Last summer holiday , I went on a trip to Beijing with my parents .

It took us two hours to go there by plane .As soon as we arrived there ,we went to visit the Palace Museum and Tian’an men Square . The next day we went to the Summer Palace . The view there was very beautiful . We tasted many famous delicious Beijing foods . such as Beijing Duck .I also bought some souvenirs for my friends .Although we felt very tired ,we enjoyed ourselves very much .

I hope to visit Beijing again very soon.
