杭州过年的娱乐活动大致有锣鼓、纸鸢、龙灯和花爆4种。所谓锣鼓又称年锣鼓，在大锣大鼓之外，加上脆鼓、小锣和竹板。年锣鼓在正月初五之内，多为商家所用，另外，年锣鼓还有为其它娱乐活动喧染助兴的功能。杭州人对各式年锣鼓有自己的说法：只闻其声不闻其词的取名为元宵鼓、招财鼓、雨夹雪和七五三；既闻其声又听其词的叫做十番、风云会和丝弦锣鼓；既无节奏又无言词的杭州人统称为乱劈柴。
