Qing Dynasty emperors also used this place to hold audience and for other important ceremonies. It functions both as decoration and fire control .The five bridges spanning the river represent the five virtues preached by Confucius :benevolence, righteousness, rites, intellence and fidelity. People love to fly kites during the Qingming Festival. Kite flying is actually not limited to the Qingming Festival. Its uniqueness lies in that people fly kites not during the day, but also at night. A string of little lanterns tied onto the kite or the thread look like shining stars, and therefore, are called "gods lanterns."

The Qingming Festival is also a time to plant trees, for the survival rate of saplings is high and trees grow fast later. In the past, the Qingming Festival was called "Arbor Day". But since 1979, "Arbor Day" was settled as March 12 according to the gregorian calendar.

Nowadays, there are many kinds of activities for people entertaining in their leisure time, especially in holiday, such as climbing a mountain, having a picnic, holding a party and so on. However, these recreational activities have its advantages but also bring some harmful influences to people’s lives.

First, to some extent, these recreational activities enrich people’s lives. Those who take part in different activities will not be easy to feel lonely or boring in their leisure time and live wonderful lives instead. Second, taking part in some group activities is a good form to strengthen friendships. For example, many students will hold a union to collect their old classmates or friends in winter holiday so that they have a common time to communicate with each other. Last but not least, such activities like climbing a mountain provide a good chance to do exercise.

However, these recreational activities also bring some problems at the same time. For one thing, taking part in too many these activities will increase the burden of themselves or their families because it is inevitable to spend some money in holding these activities. For another, some recreational activities have potential harm for participants’ health, particularly staying up all night, drinking and smoking.

Therefore, in my opinion, we have to make a careful consideration before we take part in these recreational activities.

The volunteering spirit has spread among the Chinese people in recent years, especially among young people.

Volunteering is of tremendous benefits to both those in need and society. Take the Wenchuan Earthquake as an example. Hundreds of thousands of volunteers play an active role in Wenchuan quake-hit areas. And they contribute daily necessaries, offer medical help and psychological help to the disaster relief work.

Besides, volunteering would be beneficial to the volunteers themselves~ Getting involved in volunteering, volunteers will be exposed to a new environment, and they can learn how to work well in a team, how to improve their interpersonal skills and organizational skills, all of which are critical for their professional growth.
