Today the quality of our natural environment has become an important issue. The world population is rising so quickly that the world has become too

It is undeniable that the worsening environment has become the biggest concern of the present-day world. Land resources are dwindling because of water loss and soil erosion. Waste gases poison the air we breathe. The rivers and lakes are polluted by waste dumped in them from factories. It is probably no exaggeration to say that deterioration of the quality of the environment threatens the existence of mankind itself.

Some people are of the opinion that the environmental problem is the price we have to pay for economic development. But I do not think that this argument is valid. After all, what is the point of economic growth if peoples lives are adversely alfected by worsening environmental pollution?

There is plenty of evidence to show that sustainable development can be achieved by balancing economic growth with protection of the environment. The key to achieving this is to make people aware of the seriousness of the problem. 记得科学老师给我们说过，一节一号电池烂在地里，可以使1平方米的土壤永久失去利用价值；一粒纽扣电池可使600吨水受到污染，相当于一个人一生的饮水量。若将废旧电池混入生活垃圾一起填埋，或者随手丢弃，渗出的汞及其他重金属物质就会渗透于土壤，污染地下水，破坏人类的生存环境，威胁到人类的健康。

但废电池的危害不是马上能看到的，就好像吸烟一样，时间长了才能体会到它的害处。平时不是有人说“乱扔电池危害不大”吗？我觉得这句话既不对又不负责任。电池中的有害物质所造成的疾病和对环境的污染是无法想象的，废旧电池里的铅、汞等有毒物质通过各种途径进入人的体内，长期积蓄难以排除，损害神经系统、造血功能和骨骼，甚至可以致癌，这并不是危言耸听啊！

现在，不少城市都设立了废旧电池回收箱，我想我们也应该这样做，再也不能让废旧电池无家可归了。据说，废旧电池还能进行再利用呢！集中收集，废旧利用，既节能又环保，一举两得，何乐而不为呢？
