他还十分喜爱打网球、台球。20世纪50年代，聂荣臻的住处与邓小平家仅有一墙之隔，连通两家的小红门从来都是敞开着的。在两家院子里，工作人员平整出了一个网球场，聂荣臻与邓小平经常在这块球场上锻炼有时。有时逢节假日，聂荣臻还会约上邓小平一家或是贺龙、罗荣桓、罗瑞卿等人到长城或十三陵等地郊游、爬山。聂荣臻特别喜欢约请钓鱼好手贺龙一起钓鱼。只要甩下鱼钩，他便沉稳地坐在渔场边，神情专注地注视着鱼儿的动静。他甩下的鱼钩就像撒下了天罗地网，再滑头的鱼遇到他的鱼钩诱饵也只有自投罗网了。每次钓鱼结束后，他都要与贺龙比一比谁的收获大。有一次，聂荣臻钓到一条5公斤重的大草鱼，一回到家，他便吩咐秘书将那条大草鱼分成几份，分送给罗荣桓等老战友，让他们共同分享这胜利的成果。

1956年10月，中央任命聂荣臻为国务院副总理、科学规划委员会党组书记，他肩上的担子更重了。在那段时间，聂荣臻连打网球、打台球的时间都没有了，甚至把台球桌交还给了有关单位，看球的机会也少了。但他始终坚持散步。无论是盛夏还是寒冬，他总要利用各种机会走一走、散散步。聂荣臻曾说过：身体是革命事业的资本，这个资本不能丢。他还以亲身体会向他人介绍散步的好处与方法。三年自然灾害期间，有一次，一些干部向他反映：我们的科技人员，甚至有一些老科学家，由于缺少必要的食品与营养，不少人得了浮肿病。聂荣臻得知后心情十分不安。他立即以自己的名义向海军、北京、广州、济南、沈阳等军区领导同志呼吁，请求他们尽快设法给予支援，调拨给国防科研战线一批猪肉、鱼、海带、黄豆、水果等副食品。这些食品以中央和军委的名义很快分配给了每个专家和科技人员。他自己带头捐款购买营养品分送给科研第一线的知识分子，还呼吁大家都来关心科研工作者的身体健康，并要求各级行政领导和政治机关工作人员做好科研人员的后勤工作，关心他们的吃饭、住房、小孩入托、两地分居、业余生活、体育锻炼等问题。他说：要把科研工作者的身体健康问题作为大事来抓，好身体是搞科研的资本，这个资本丢不得。

聂荣臻常风趣地说：“人生70而拐，80而车。我的体会是，人过了70岁，行动就离不开拐杖了，过了80岁，行动就离不开手推轮椅了。”然而，就是在这样的情况下，他仍然持之以恒、锻炼不辍。不能拄着拐杖散步，就扶着手推轮椅或由人架着散步。后来实在不行了，就在轮椅上、躺椅上、病床上做各种动作，活动四肢。
