2004年3月，为支援新疆高等教育事业的发展，孟二冬主动要求到新疆石河子大学支教。

中文系2002级学生张瑜记得，那一天，《唐代文学》第一课，一位身材高大、衣着整洁的老师走到讲台:“同学们好，我是北大的孟二冬，现在开始上课。”

旁征博引，文采飞扬，隽永的竖行板书，中气十足的嗓音……浩瀚古代文学的大门就这样为边疆的学子缓缓打开。那堂课，大家做了厚厚一沓笔记，有的同学“甩着胳膊直喊手酸”。

学生们发现，在孟老师的课堂上，不仅能感受唐代文学的恢宏气象，还能窥探做学问的方法。比如，在讲“初唐四杰”的排名次序时，老师从讲述最初的排名方法和理由，扩展到多年来几次排名的变更，再到学术界的研究现状。“总是能由一个点入手，连成知识线，最后扩展到面。”

孟二冬告诉学生，“要多读书，相信书，但不要尽信书”。他让学生们为教材“找错儿”，对书中每一首诗、每一句话都仔细查对。在石河子大学，除了为中文系2002级100多名学生授课外，孟二冬还为中文系教师教授《唐代科考》选修课。

年轻教师张凡最喜欢去“蹭听”孟老师的课。在他的印象中，孟老师“学问好、课讲得好、心态好”。

然而，没过多久，孟二冬就出现了严重的嗓子喑哑症状。在医生开出“噤声”的医嘱后，他仍以惊人的毅力，忍受着巨大的痛苦，坚持为师生授课。

后来，孟二冬“咳嗽得厉害，脸憋得通红”“几乎是用气流在讲课”。大家实在不忍心，请求老师不要再上课了。孟二冬却依然倔强，“我还可以讲”。

“病得严重时边咳血边给我们讲，说不出来就写在黑板上，很多课我们是含着眼泪上完的。”吴新锋说。

经医院诊断，孟二冬罹患食管恶性肿瘤。人们这才知道，一个乒乓球大小的肿瘤正卡在他的食道里，气道被挤得只剩下1/5，随时都有窒息死亡的危险。

但孟二冬放不下他的学生们。2004年4月26日，憔悴的他被搀扶着走上讲台，为学生们上完最后一课。

张瑜永远忘不了，那天，老师用细微的声音将晚唐诗词逐一梳理，“每讲一句都十分困难，额头上的汗珠一滴滴往下淌”。大家哭着求他不要再讲，他却笑着说“没关系”。

“没给大家画上一个完满的句号，很抱歉。”课后，孟二冬向学生鞠了一躬，艰难地说。“做学问要耐得住寂寞，大家要多看些书，都会比我强。”他转身在黑板上写下那句经常对学生说的话:“板凳要坐十年冷，文章不著一字空”。

台下，学生们的泪水早已模糊了双眼，凝望着老师的背影，不舍离开。

回北京住院，病痛折磨中，他坚持指导研究生，学生们络绎不绝地拿着论文到病床前汇报，“这是他最快乐的时候”。

但他最惦记的，还是远在边疆的学生。新疆学习资料紧缺，孟二冬自己掏钱买了全套的《全唐文》《十三经注疏》《文苑英华》等书籍，托人带去。学生们也惦记着老师，他们募集了近3000元寄到北京，希望能为老师尽份心意，但孟二冬却叫妻子用这笔钱刻录了200多张古籍文献光盘带去新疆，还筹划让自己的博士生到石河子大学继续任教。

2006年4月22日，49岁的孟二冬因医治无效，永远离开了他挚爱的讲台和学生。他被授予全国五一劳动奖章、全国模范教师等称号，被追授为全国优秀共产党员。

桃李不言，下自成蹊。涓涓细流，最终换来山花烂漫。如今，孟二冬的60多名新疆学生已成长为人民教师，其中45人留疆执教。而一批批燕园师生，多年来也在传递着爱心，志愿到新疆、西藏、青海、内蒙古、云南等西部省份支教。
