扩大词的表现功能，开拓词境，是苏轼改革词体的主要方向。他将传统的表现女性化的柔情之词为扩展为表现男性化的豪情之词，将传统上只表现爱情之词扩展为表现性情之词，使词像诗一样可以充分表现作者的性情怀抱和人格个性。苏轼让充满进取精神、胸怀远大理想、富有激情和生命力的仁人志士昂首走入词世界，改变了词作原有的柔软情调，开启了南宋辛派词人的先河。
