for the use of people， animals and plant life. All through history men have

tried to build their homes near the sources of fresh water. Now fresh water is

becoming scarce， but more and more is needed because of the increasing number of

people in the world. Some industries also use large amounts of fresh water in

the production of things such as steel， petroleum， paper and rubber and so on.

Scientists estimate that the need for fresh water will have doubled by the year

2003. If they are correct， we must find new ways of saving it or producing it.

Some nations have worked on the problem and are already sharing their

information with others. They are trying to keep their rivers from becoming

polluted. Deep wells are also being dug， and rain water is being collected in

huge artificial lakes. In one way or another， they hope to provide enough water

to satisfy the needs of their people.

Myhometownis a beautiful place with a pupulation of eight million.It

stands beside the Gulf of Bohai.

Tianjin has many high office and commercial buildings and wide tree-lined

streets.Several excellent world-famous institutions of higher learning are

located here,namely Nankai University and Tianjin University.As a most important

industrial center for North China,her hundreds of factories and joint ventures

with foreign companies manufacture a wide range of top-grade and high-tech

products or consumer goods.Many of these products have attained or surpassed

world levels.Markets and department stores,big or small,are well-stocked with

all kinds of goods,which are high in quality but low in price.

But in the old days,Tianjin used to be a poor and backward city

characteristic of semi-colonialism and semi-feudalism.The few rich persons lived

in luxury houses while the majority of the working people lived in old,shabby

huts or buildings on narrow and muddy streets.The working class led a very

miserable life.

Today people in Tianjin are going all out to build their city into a

beautiful and prosperous place to live in.

As summer vacation is coming, my parents have made some plans for me,

because they want me to learn something useful. This first thing they want me to

do is to learn swimming. This is an important skill. It can save my life if I

fall into the water. I also want to learn swimming, so that I can do many cool

sports. I am so excited about the lesson.

Things in the world are changing. People are changing and every creature is

changing. Changing is a neutral word. We can’t judge it is good or bad in

general, because every coin has two sides. But sometimes we need to change,

because it is good for us. Sometimes we will meet some difficult or

uncomfortable situation. When we are not able to change it, we need to change

ourselves. If both of us refuse to budge, the problem would not be solved.

I’m going to have a busy weekend! On Saturday, I’m going visit my friends
