这部小说描述一年近六十岁的高级渔夫,当独自一人去海上钓鱼,钓一条大鱼,其实没有拉。高级的渔夫社会化几天后鱼,才发现这是超过了自己的大马林鱼渔船几折,虽然知道很难取胜,但仍不放弃。后来又因大马林鱼伤口在几个成群的鲨鱼鱼鱼鱼腥味带来一阵食物,但老人还是不希望这样放弃,最终突出环绕,返回到大鱼带渔港,让其他渔夫不钦佩了。
