听了琼珊的事，老贝尔曼没有说什么，只是担心地凝视着窗外风雨中的常春藤。

很快，老贝尔曼的睫毛已被雨水浇湿，雨不断地迷蒙着他的双眼。因为雨太大，他只好皱起眉头、眼睛眯成缝，手一点儿一点儿地勉强挪动着，全神贯注地画着。

又过了一会儿，他只感觉全身冰冷冰冷的，手和脚似乎冷得麻木起来，可他依然倔强地画着：每画一笔都用尽力气，像在担心风雨会在日后把画冲刷变淡，又仿佛担心着色不够而影响那个生病的女画家欣赏这片宝贵的叶子。

夜更深了，天气也越来越冷，可贝尔曼却像忘了时间，不断反复修改、反复调整……

终于，在日出前，修改完那片常春藤叶的最后一笔时，老贝尔曼实在坚持不住，沿着梯子滑落下来，画板和画笔也散落在地上……

他忍受着疼痛，艰难地撑起身子，猫着腰站起来一步一挨地走进房间。一阵剧烈的咳嗽过后，老贝尔曼深知自己的病情更加猛烈了，但他依然欣慰地看着：在初升的太阳映照下，常春藤下那片叶子正闪闪发亮。

老贝尔曼深切的期望着那个病中的女画家也能看到这片叶子——这是他最后的杰作，一片永不凋落的常春藤叶!
