And also today I want to draw attention to another group of people who deserve our thoughts this Christmas. We have all been conscious of those who have given their lives, or who have been severely wounded, while serving with the Armed Forces in Iraq and Afghanistan. The dedication of the National Armed Forces Memorial was also an occasion to remember those who have suffered while serving in these and every other place of unrest since the end of the Second World War.

For their families, Christmas will bring back sad memories, and I pray that all of you, who are missing those who are dear to you, will find strength and comfort in your families and friends.

The original Santa Claus, St. Nicholas, was born in the ancient southeastern Turkish town of Lycia early in the fourth century. His generosity was legend, and he was particularly fond of children. We know this primarily through Roman accounts of his patronage of youth, which eventually led to his becoming the patron saint of children. These drawings, executed over twenty years, exhibit a gradual evolution in Santa from the pudgy, diminutive, elf-like creature of Dr. Moores immortal poem to the bearded, potbellied, life-size bell ringer familiar on street corners across America today. Nasts cartoons also showed the world how Santa spent his entire year constructing toys, checking on childrens behavior, reading their requests for special gifts. His images were incorporated into the Santa lore.

Chinas labor day is on May 1st, but not all countries will be on May 1 for labor day, but in the memory of the working people around the world unity fighting during the holiday, although is not the same as the date, countries around the world generally corresponding will celebrations, specific celebration and habits are also quite different.

新中国成立以后政务院于1949年12月将5月1日定为法定的劳动节，是日全国放假一天。每年的这一天，举国欢庆，人们换上节日的盛装，兴高采烈地聚集在公园、剧院、广场，参加各种庆祝集会或文体娱乐活动，并对有突出贡献的劳动者进行表彰。

中国的劳动节是在5月1日，但并不是所有的国家都将5月1日定为劳动节，但在这个纪念这个全世界劳动人民团结战斗的节日里，虽然日期不一样，世界各国一般都还是会举行相应的庆祝活动，具体的庆祝方式和习惯也大不相同。

「圣诞节christmas」这个字，由「基督(christ)」和「崇拜聚会(mass)」两个字组成。所以，「耶稣基督」和「敬拜基督」二者合起来，就是圣诞节的中心。

圣诞日期

耶稣在哪一天降生?圣经并没有明载。但一般教会，普遍以十二月廿五日，来纪念耶稣降生。一年之中，日间最短的是十二月廿二日，这是黑暗最长、阳光最短的一日。古人知道这个事实，所以在这日之后庆祝「光复」。罗马人在廿五日，把灯挂在窗上请太阳回来;德国人装饰常青树，因为常青树代表太阳会回来。

后来，古罗马人归信基督后，就把十二月廿五日，改为敬拜那万福之源，生命之光的耶稣。所以，在这段最黑和最寒冷的时间，庆祝圣诞并不令人意外，因为神把耶稣的光和温暖送给我们。让我们在圣诞节，相信耶稣，接纳他十架代死之功，使自己与神和好，得著他所赐的新生命!

圣诞老人

圣尼古拉，是历史上真正的「圣诞老人」。他于公元二百八十年，生于小亚细亚一个富有家庭。他幼年时失去了双亲，后来成为一位传道人。他曾做过主教，也曾为持守信仰而入狱。他是最出名的「慈善家」，最爱施舍金钱或物品，帮助有需要的人。

传说中他会穿上特别的衣服，在街上把礼物送给穷苦的孩子。据说圣尼古拉于公元三百四十三年去世，但很多小孩子相信他仍然活著，而且，在圣诞节会以送礼物给他们，来庆祝耶稣基督降生。

圣诞袜

很多家庭在圣诞节期间，挂上特别的袜子。这袜与圣尼古拉(圣诞老人)有关。据说尼古拉要帮助一位父亲，为他女儿预备嫁妆，他把一袋金子，从窗口掷入他们的家。那位女儿正把袜挂起来弄乾，那袋金子刚好跌进袜子里。

圣诞礼物

圣诞节人们互相送礼物，是因为神赐给世人最宝贵的礼物──他的独生子耶稣基督。因此人们欢欣鼓舞，并为了纪念神的爱，而互相送礼表示爱心。

但在这个物质主义的时代，商人利用圣诞节来赚钱。而人们特别是小孩子，想起圣诞节多会想起「收礼物」。但圣经说：「施比受更为有福」，如果我们送礼物的目的，是为了表示爱心关怀，那是很好的，应该多多的送礼物。但为「送礼而送礼」，那就不必了。

圣诞装饰

圣诞装饰，大多有它们的意义：灯代表基督是世界之光;绿色的常青树、冬青树和槲寄生作为圣诞树，代表耶稣带给我们的生命;而基督教的象徵──天使和星星，使这些树更突出。而每一种树，也有它们不同的意义：香柏树代表耶稣王的身分;冬青树锋利的尖端和红橘子，代表基督钉死在十字架上。

冬天在五时左右就天黑了，当您把圣诞灯饰亮起时，请记著耶稣把光和神的生命带进黑暗的生命中。

基督象徵树(chrismontree)

有些教会，以「基督象徵树」代替圣诞树。基督象徵树，由美国维吉尼亚州的信义会发起，「基督象徵树」与普通圣诞树的分别是，它挂的是象徵耶诞基督的装饰物。灯全都是白色的，这树只有白色和金色，白色代表耶稣的圣洁，金色代表基督王的身分。

十二天圣诞节

「十二天圣诞节」指由圣诞节计起的十二天。世人以十二小时(半日)的时间，庆祝基督的降生;教会则以十二日来庆祝，因为基督是一年十二个月都与我们一起的。

基督降临节

圣诞节前的四个星期，称为「基督降临节」，用以筹备庆祝耶稣基督的降生。旧约圣经(耶稣出生前)预言，神会差遣弥赛亚(即救世主)来世界，新约圣经(耶稣出生后)预言耶稣会再回来。

圣诞士的糖

传说士的糖，是由一位希望见证耶稣的糖果商人发明的。士的糖是硬的，正如耶稣基督是万古的磐石;「j」形的糖身，代表耶稣(jesus)头一个字母或牧羊人的杖;白色代表耶稣的纯洁;红色的纹代表基督为我们的罪流血，另外三条较细小的红纹，是他为我们所受的鞭痕;有些士的糖有绿色的纹，这代表耶稣是神给我们的礼物。士的糖是用薄荷做的，因薄荷是牛膝草类(耶稣钉在十字架上时，兵丁以海绒浸了酸酒，绑在牛膝草上，送到他唇边)，而且牛膝草代表洁净和牺牲。耶稣是纯洁的羔羊，他来为世人的罪牺牲。

下次你见到士的糖时，请记住：耶稣基督是我们的好牧人，他是万古磐石，他并没有犯罪，但舍身流血为我们赎罪，使信他的人得永生!

在古代，人们把六称为阴数，九称为阳数。九月九这一天，两阳相聚称之为“重阳”，这一天又叫做“老人节”，是我国一个历史悠久的节日。

今天下午，值勤过后，我就和同学一起坐43路车回家。车上很挤，我好不容易才找到一个座位，就一屁股坐下了，可以好好的休息一会了。

可是，车刚过了一站地，有一位老爷爷上车了，他微微驼背，大概六十多岁的 样子。我马上就想到了要给老人让座，但又转念一想，自己好不容易才坐下，让了怪可惜的。

怎么办啊?到底是 让还是不让?我想，身为一个少先队员，如果我不让的话，那又怎么对得起我胸前的红领巾呢?不能再想了，我一定要让。于是，我站起来，说：“爷爷，您来坐吧!”只见爷爷笑了笑，然后慢慢地坐下，并对我说：“真是好孩子!”我听了以后，心里也乐了，因为我做到了。

虽然我失去了一个供我休息的座位，但是，我却得到了表扬的话语和愉快的心情，这是多么快乐呀!

This was an English tradition which started centuries ago. On Christmas eve, plum porridge was served to the people. As years passed, various other things like dry fruits, honey and spices we’re used. Soon this porridge got replaced with the Christmas cake. Christmas cakes are made using eggs, butter, confections, fruits,etc. Today aChristmas cake is an integral part of a Christmas menu.

This tradition comes from the story of the three wise men who got gifts for baby Jesus on Christmas. Every Christmas, gifts are exchanged among loved ones,especially children. This refers to the tradition of placing alighted candle outside ho uses during the Christmas season. A candle signifies hope as it brings light even to the darkest room. In the earlier times, when Christians were persecuted, they were not allowed to practice prayers. Hence, a single candle used to be placed outside the house as a sign that Christian prayers were being conducted inside.

这个传统指的是人们会在圣诞期间在屋子外面放一支点燃的蜡烛。即便在最黑暗的屋子，蜡烛也能带来光明，寓意希望。早些年代，也就是基督徒深受迫害的时候，他们被禁止布道祷告。因此，基督徒们在屋外放一支蜡烛，暗示他们仍在心里默默祷告。

This is yet another age-old tradition of Christmas. A crib refers tothe Nativity Scene that is prepared using small statues. The first crib ever was made outside a church of St. Francis of Assisi f or children to show them how the Nativity scene was like. Since then, this tradition became very popular.

This is one of the most wonderful traditions of all. Christmas candies are distributed to neighbors during the Yuletide season. Onthe day of Christmas, all misunderstandings and grudges are forgotten and the community comes together to celebrate the birth of Christ.

These traditions have been carried out for decades, yet they are celebrated with more and more exuberance each year. The level of excitement has never gone down. It just keeps getting better and better with time.

这些传统沿袭已有几十年，一年比一年热闹，盛况可谓有增无减。相信随着时间的推移，人们对传统习俗的热情只会越来越高。

Prince Albert, husband of Queen Victoria, is credited with being responsible for introducing the custom of the Christmas tree to the British public by decorating the first English Christmas tree at Windsor Castle in 1841 using candles, sweets, fruit and gingerbread.

The popularity of the Christmas tree grew in Britain during the first half of the 20th century, with trees becoming bigger and more elaborately decorated with bells, baubles and tinsel. However, the onset of the Second World War resulted in a ban on cutting down trees for decoration and people resorted to having small, artificial tabletop trees bearing home made decorations. These were often taken down into the air raid shelters when the sirens sounded to provide a bit of Christmas cheer!

This all changed following the war, and large trees were erected in many public places to celebrate Christmas. The most famous of these is the tree in Trafalgar Square, London which is an annual gift from the Norwegian government to give thanks for the help they received from Britain during the war.

Chrismas Father was the descendant of a deity called Odin. Its also said that Chrismas Father comes from San Nichola, so he is also called St.Nicholas. He was the bishop of Asia

Minor city of Rafah and he was called a man of God after his death. He is an old man in red clothes and he wears a red hat.He has white mustache. He comes from the north on a blowmobile every Chrismas Day. He went into peoples houses by the track and he put the presents into childrens socks. So in western countries,parents put the gifts to their kids in kids socks and put them on the head of the bed on Chrismas Eve. On the second day, the first thing after kids wake up is to find the presents from Chrismas Fathers.
